Yep....I am always harping on getting grind size right. This graphic is a great explainer but doesn't cover drip coffee. For drip coffee, you want a medium grind — roughly the texture of coarse sand or table salt.
Here's a quick breakdown of the spectrum so you can dial it in:
- Too fine (espresso range) — water moves too slowly, over-extracts, tastes bitter and harsh.
- Medium-fine — okay for some drip machines, but can still run bitter if your brewer is slow.
- Medium ✓ — the sweet spot for most drip brewers. Consistent extraction, balanced flavor.
- Medium-coarse — works well for slower drip machines or if you're getting bitterness with medium.
- Too coarse (French press range) — water rushes through, under-extracts, tastes weak and sour.
Practical tips:
If your coffee tastes bitter → grind a little coarser
If it tastes sour or weak → grind a little finer
Blade grinders produce uneven particles, which causes both over- and under-extraction simultaneously — a burr grinder makes a noticeable difference
Grind fresh, right before brewing, for the best flavor
