In honor of spooky season, we’re taking a look back at the Queen Mary’s days as the legendary “Grey Ghost” during World War II! Pictured here on September 28, 1944, preparing to depart Greenock, Scotland, for the United States, the Queen Mary had traded her glamorous ocean liner appearance for a grey wartime paint scheme and a new mission.

And the numbers are pretty hauntingly impressive! 👀 By the end of World War II, the Queen Mary had transported more than 800,000 people and traveled over 600,000 miles in wartime service. She even set a record in 1943 when she carried an astonishing 16,683 troops and crew members on a single voyage!

But her mission wasn’t just about carrying troops overseas. On return voyages, the Queen Mary also transported wounded service members, including American troops returning home aboard the ship in September 1944.

These photographs offer a remarkable glimpse into the Queen Mary’s extraordinary wartime history.

Yesterday, the Queen Mary and the Long Beach City were honored with the 2026 Tourism Landmark Award during the Travel and Tourism Marketing Association (TTMA) annual Anastasia K. Mann Awards Luncheon, hosted aboard our historic ship. As we continue to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Queen Mary's maiden voyage, this special recognition honors her lasting impact on Southern California tourism and the City of Long Beach's continued commitment to preserving and revitalizing this iconic landmark for generations to come.

The award was proudly accepted by Steve Caloca, Managing Director of the Queen Mary, and Eric Romero, Waterfront Development Bureau Manager for the City of Long Beach, recognizing the continued partnership and shared dedication to preserving the ship's extraordinary legacy.

A heartfelt thank you to TTMA for this incredible honor, and congratulations to Gary C. Sherwin, recipient of the Anastasia K. Mann Leadership Award!

Here's to honoring our history and celebrating the Queen Mary's next chapter!

A special meeting between two generations of Cunard history. 🚢

On Monday, while Queen Elizabeth was in port in San Pedro, Queen Mary officers had the special opportunity to step aboard the 2010 Cunard ship for a tour. Later that day, we had the pleasure of returning the welcome, inviting Queen Elizabeth’s officers aboard the Queen Mary for a tour of their own.

It was a special morning bringing the officers of these two Cunard Queens together, connecting Queen Mary’s storied history with the Cunard tradition that continues at sea today.

A wonderful day celebrating shared history, and a memorable moment between two remarkable ships. ❤️
