U-Know Pizza began as Babe's Pizza over 40 years ago. Originally owned by Frank
and "Babe" Van Ness, the store was at the corner of Erie and 17th Street. Mike and
Karen Mohrle purchased the store from Frank when it was located on W. The Mohrle's ran the business for 22 years and relocated
it to it's current location at 96 East Market Street. Steve and Peggy Whaley bought the
business from the Mohrles May 2012. Babe and Frank's recipes were handed to the
Mohrles and then to the Whaleys.

Running a business is hard.

And I don’t just mean physically.

The people who do it know—you work way more hours than most people realize, and a lot of the time, you probably don’t get paid what those hours are actually worth.

But there’s an emotional side to it that I don’t think people talk about enough.

Your mind is always on your business.

Even when you’re not there.
Even when you’re “off.”
Even when you’re supposed to be relaxing.

You’re thinking about sales.
Bills.
Payroll.
What needs fixed.
What needs ordered.
What you could be doing better.
What next week is going to look like.

It never completely shuts off.

And then you hit those days—or weeks, or sometimes months—where business slows down.

Suddenly you start wondering if you’re going to make it.

You always do.

Hell, it’s been almost 10 years.

But that doesn’t stop you from getting inside your own head.

And I think one of the hardest parts is when your identity gets wrapped up in the thing you built.

I know I’m more than “the pizza guy.”

I’m a father.
A husband.
A friend.
A son.
And, depending on who you ask, kind of a somewhat funny guy.

There are people I love and people who love me.

But when you’ve poured this much of yourself into something, it’s hard not to take it personally when things slow down.

A bad week can start to feel like you’re failing.

You’re not.

Business moves in waves.

Some weeks you can barely keep up.
Some weeks you wonder where everybody went.

So when you’re in the low part of it, you just keep going.

Keep showing up.
Keep adjusting.
Keep doing the work.

And ride the wave.

Because eventually, it comes back in.

What does it mean to be eclectic?

Merriam-Webster defines it as:

“Composed of elements drawn from a variety of sources.”

And if that doesn’t perfectly describe Logansport, I’m not sure what does.

We’re a small town where somehow, within a few blocks, you can get a little bit of damn near everything.

Different food. Different people. Different ideas. Different music. Different places doing completely different things — all packed into the same little community.

And I think that’s exactly what makes this next show at the State Theater so cool.

This Saturday they’re putting on a show featuring:

Rock.
Rap.
Metal.
…and comedy?!

Because of course they are.

Honestly, it only makes sense.

That’s eclectic.

And that’s Logansport.

The State Theater is a nonprofit that continues to bring all kinds of entertainment, artists, and experiences into our community, and to me, it has become a pretty damn perfect representation of what makes this town special.

So I HIGHLY encourage you to go check this one out.

Tickets are only $5 in advance or $10 at the door.

Doors open Saturday at 6:30 PM.
Show starts at 7:30 PM.

Go support the State.

Go support live entertainment.

And go see just how eclectic Logansport can be!!

If you know me — or you’ve ever seen me in my element at U-Knows — you know I have a thing for faces.

I tend to notice when somebody is new to the area… or maybe just new to us.

Saturday, I had a group come in that I DEFINITELY didn’t recognize.

And whenever that happens, especially if they’re not from Logansport, I always want to spread a little love and tell them about our weird little town.

Turns out they were from Muncie!!

“Cool, cool — what brings you to Logansport?”

…pizza.

I had to take a second to gather my bearings because surely they were here for SOMETHING else.

Nope.

They drove up here because they wanted to give our pizza a shot.

(And they gave us a fabulous and very generous score, by the way ❤️)

Okay… now here’s my chance.

I can tell them about Logansport!

“So what do you guys have planned after this? Seeing one of the concerts? Going out for drinks?”

Nope.

They were heading to TENNESSEE.

Now my brain is actually spinning because, in my head, this simply does not compute. 😂

So eventually I just had to spell it out:

“So let me get this straight…

You guys drove 80 miles NORTH to Logansport specifically to try my pizza…

…and now you’re turning around and heading all the way BACK DOWN through Indiana to go to Tennessee?”

Yep.

I was genuinely blown away.

You spend enough time standing behind the counter making pizza and I think sometimes you forget how cool it is that somebody would choose to spend that much of their day just to come give what you make a shot.

So if you guys happen to see this — thank you.

Seriously.

I hope you enjoyed the pizza.

I hope you had an awesome time at Dollywood.

And I hope you know how much I appreciated you making U-Know Pizza part of the trip. ❤️🍕
