Today, we take a moment to reflect with heavy hearts as we remember and honor the man who started it all, the founder and legend of Chisholm Trail Bar-B-Q, Floyd Wilhelm, who passed away yesterday, August 13, 2026.
In 1978, Floyd opened Chisholm Trail Bar-B-Q and began a legacy that would become part of the fabric of Lockhart and help shape what Lockhart barbecue is today. What started with a vision for great barbecue grew into a place where generations of families have gathered, employees have become family, and countless memories have been made over the last 48 years.
For 36 years, Floyd and his family built Chisholm Trail into a destination, a place people would drive miles to visit for his famous “old pit style BBQ.”
My family has had the privilege of carrying Chisholm Trail forward since 2015, but we have never forgotten whose hands built its foundation. Floyd’s name and legacy will FOREVER be woven into the story of this restaurant.
Today, we are grateful for every employee who has helped keep this place going. We are grateful for the generations of customers who have walked through our doors and supported Chisholm Trail for nearly five decades. Most of all, we are incredibly grateful for Floyd, for his vision, his hard work, and the legacy he left behind.
A day of celebration will come soon, where we gather to honor his life, his family, and the incredible legacy he created.
In loving memory of Floyd Wilhelm.
May we continue to honor what he started & carry his legacy forward for many years to come.
