I learned a lot teaching little ones in Sunday school last week.
(Average age about 4)
Most of the discussion was related to our Noah’s ark story.
“There are different ideas as to how old Noah was when he started building…..” I said.
“Oh” one said confidently, “He had his 25th birthday on that boat.”
“I see, didn’t know that.”
We discussed how big the door in the side of the ark must have been. Not only did Mr. and Mrs. Noah need to board, but also the elephants and giraffes had to fit through the door. Maybe giraffes can duck.
“But there were 3 horses on there.”
Again, “I see, I didn’t know. What kind?”
I expected “quarter, mini, and Shetland.”
I was wrong.
“2 brown and a white.”
Didn’t know that either.
“It began to rain….and it rained and it rained.”
“Yeah, I heard it rained 30 days and 40 nights.”
“Finally, the drops slowed…they waited…would there be one more? They listened closely….not one more drop fell. The sun came out. Can you imagine how happy they were??!!!”
“Yeah, they’s dancing in that boat!!!”
The child probably wasn't wrong. Think about it. Such rejoicing to know their storm was over!!
Class time ended and we never got the door open and everybody and everything off the boat.
Maybe next week.
Fact is, I realized Monday that we never talked about the rainbow on Sunday.
I was still reeling from Noah’s 25th birthday, 2 browns and a white, and the dancing on the boat!!!
