Wine lovers use the word "terroir" to describe how a growing environment shapes flavor. Coffee has its own sense of place too.

Soil composition, rainfall, temperature, sunlight, elevation, plant variety, and surrounding vegetation can all influence how a coffee develops.

Many exceptional coffees are grown high above sea level.

At higher elevations, cooler temperatures can slow the development of the coffee fruit. That longer maturation period may allow more complex sugars, acids, and flavors to develop inside the seed.

This does not mean elevation alone guarantees quality. Farming, variety, climate, harvesting, and processing still matter enormously.

Think of elevation as one part of the terrain—a strategic advantage that must still be supported by skill and discipline.
