Rumors have begun to circulate, and with heavy hearts, we can now share that they are true: after 72 years, Luiggis Pizzeria will be closing permanently.
We want to take a moment to recognize the previous owners, who did a wonderful job keeping this place alive for the last 14 years. They carried the torch with care, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to have tried continuing their legacy.
From day one, we faced an uphill climb—financially, logistically, and emotionally. Bringing a 72-year-old building up to code came with significant, unexpected costs and an overwhelming number of hoops to jump through. We dealt with layers of red tape, compliance challenges, and unfortunately, very little support from the city when we needed it most. These hurdles drained valuable time and resources that we had hoped to pour into food, service, and community instead.
Still, we pressed on with a deep belief in the value of preserving this place.
When we took over the business, it was on the brink of closing—quietly and without a proper farewell. We stepped in with the hope of honoring its long-standing legacy, bringing back some of the cherished recipes from 1953 many grew up with, and breathing new life into a place that meant so much to so many. We did our best to stay true to the heart of what this place once was. But we also learned that while memories stay sweet, tastes and expectations evolve.
Many of the recipes we worked hard to bring back with care and authenticity didn’t land the way we hoped. Even with quality ingredients and a lot of heart behind every dish, it was a challenge to meet everyone’s expectations of what they once remembered—and that was deeply felt.
But even with that care, we received frequent negative feedback—often more than kind words. Our team showed up every day trying to create something people would love, and over time, the constant criticism became discouraging for staff who were working hard behind the scenes. We understand that everyone has their preferences, but we also want to acknowledge the emotional toll that comes with feeling like your best efforts are never enough.
On top of that, customer visits gradually became fewer and centered mostly around specialty days. As much as we love those moments, the reality is that a small business can’t survive on occasional support alone. The financial strain became too great to ignore, and continuing on would mean compromising on the standard we’ve always tried to uphold. This closure isn’t something we caused—it’s something we tried, wholeheartedly, to prevent.
We’re truly sorry we couldn’t keep the nostalgia going the way many had hoped. It’s been an incredibly tough decision, made with deep thought and even deeper gratitude for those who have supported us along the way. We want to thank every one of you who gave us a chance— who shared a meal, brought a friend, told a story from years past, or simply stopped by to say hi—thank you. You helped keep this place alive longer than it might have otherwise lasted, and for that, we’re truly grateful for allowing you to give us that chance to bring this place back.
We kindly ask for no negative feed back or comments, only memories of your visits here the last 72 years!
Thank you
