I hope y’all are proud of me that I survived another strawberry season.
It was touch and go a few times.
The math is back and we sold 2,256 slices of strawberry pie and used over 752lbs of strawberries🥵

We’re already getting lots of distress from y’all on our first weekend without it and here’s the thing- up until 2020 we never used local strawberries for the pie. We used store berries and they worked fine.

The difference of the strawberry pie with fresh local berries vs store berries is undeniable.
I’ll never say never but for now I need a break and with all the information coming out about Driscoll’s I’m just not anxious to support them.

Big shout out to Wade Lucas Farms for supplying us with all the beautiful berries we could handle right to our door weekly- the actual biggest blessing, and Gageli Farms for saving the day with morning of deliveries a few times as well!

Some things are best seasonal.
I’m not saying we won’t have strawberry pie again this year, because if I happen on some good berries- I do love ya’ll and will whip a few out. But for now let’s give me and the strawberry pies a break❤️🍓

Let’s have another quick post on AG because I have been getting so many comments and questions so I want to clarify some details:

* “Hucks Menu” is AG friendly but is not “safe” I will not call anything that comes from our kitchen completely safe because we use mammal products heavily.
We can be very careful- but we cannot absolutely guarantee that your food will not come in contact with mammal products.

*Everything on the AG menu is free of mammal products including carrageenan.
This includes the sourdough, tortillas and turkey.

*We steam the grill, use olive oil, wash our utensils and pull a fresh cutting board for AGS menu items but we are not cooking them on a separate surface- this is NOT safe for everyone with AGS but it is safe for some and it is what we can do.

*Our goal with this is NOT to market to the AG community- we are not trying to bring in more customers, we are trying to better serve our existing guests with an allergy that is increasingly common

*If you have life threatening reactions to any food I would not recommend you eat here. This applies to AGS, Dairy, Gluten and Nuts. We can be very careful but we cannot offer any guarantees

*The AG menu is for alpha gal and dairy free customers only.
Offering this menu requires separate cooking oil, procedures, time and space which we cannot realistically offer for every guest who does not actually have allergies.
Because of this items from this menu may take longer to prepare.

*Restaurant posts and menus are absolutely not the place to recommend doctors or offer medical advice. I greatly appreciate everyone’s concern and realize that this is a very sensitive subject but everyone’s health is extremely personal and we would never want to play a part in someone’s suffering even inadvertently.

More thoughts or questions?
Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Strawberry shortcake cheesecake-
Strawberry cheesecake with a vanilla sponge cake inside, fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream

Salted caramel cake that smells so good I had to have a minute🤤

I’m making oatmeal cream pies and a fresh slew of oven pies to let you know gently that the strawberry pie that’s in the cooler is the end of it for the season.
Don’t cry because it’s over- smile because it happened😅

We’re finishing up the salmon salad today and we restocked on local beef from triple R ranch so we’re leaning pretty hard on doing the blueberry bacon burger with pommes frites for dinner this weekend with the ribeyes…Cross your fingers.

The shop is overflowing with goodness especially our kid section and book selection- but retail spending is so down. I get it.
Please don’t forget small shops and local businesses even when times are tough. Shopping local for your gifts and little luxuries is so important for communities💖

Alpha Gal has been In our area for a while now.
We have watched it spread over the last couple of years feeling vaguely alarmed but mostly removed.
It came closer to home when Mysti joined our team, who has had AG for over a decade.
It hit even closer still, when our daughter’s best friend, Huck, who is 3, was diagnosed last year.

I’ve watched two really intelligent and tenacious women navigate this illness.
Mysti as someone who has had AG for so long and has so much lived experience and research as well as Liz who was thrown into becoming an advocate overnight for her son who was too small to understand what was going on with his own body.
These relationships have been so sobering for us as foodies and cooks and as parents as we gain intimate perspective to what it’s like to have your life flipped upside down by a tick borne illness.

Huck loves me for my boxes of turkey sammiches and guacamole that I can seemingly produce at any time- which I imagine is a little bit like magic for a 3 year old.. I wear that with pride.
But even for a kid, turkey sandwiches are boring after a while.

This menu is my offering to our AG customers- a selection of items that I think are still really delicious while being AG friendly.
I will say that this menu is FRIENDLY but I will not deem anything from our kitchen as completely SAFE.
Our kitchen uses mammal products heavily.
If you have life threatening reactions or fume sensitivity I would not recommend eating at ANY restaurant that uses mammal products.

Because alpha gal affects everyone so uniquely, I feel like I can offer this menu- and you can use your own personal discretion.

We typically steam part of our grill, use olive oil and clean utensils and cutting boards to prevent any cross contamination.
We do not have the space, equipment or staff to be able to cook items individually in skillets per order.
It just won’t work that way in our kitchen.

This method has worked well for our friends with AG but I do understand it won’t work for everyone.

I think that having this menu will open up some really yummy options for such a tricky and limiting illness and also streamline these increasingly common orders for our kitchen team as well❤️

⭐️this menu will NOT be available to the general public but will only be offered for people with Alpha Gal or Dairy allergy.

If Skylark had a mascot or cheerleader it would be Tiffany or “mama T” bouncing in at the start and end of each day letting us know that it is going to be/was a great day and that tomorrow will be even better.
The great thing about Tiffany is that whatever happened that day- was the goal and she’s just tickled about it.
She bounces in with enthusiasm and optimism that is genuine and seemingly comes from a well that doesn’t ever run dry. I’m hoping to tap into it somehow.

On the dinner shifts I try to check sales before she closes up so I can prepare for how much dancing there’s going to be in the dishpit- she won’t stop til everyone’s laughing.
Sometimes we make Tiffany gifs and we use them amongst ourselves because a high quality Tiffany gif is worth more than 1000 words.
She loves my little shop like it’s her own- she actually probably loves it even more than me, and regardless of what I decide to order she declares it her personal Christmas, makes it look beautiful and gets to know it, love it and buys it for herself so that she can recommend it truthfully to you all.

She does our biweekly Harrison pickups for bread and liquor and weekly payroll pickups. She handles all the vendors and consigners and all of the shop details that would swallow me whole if I didn’t have her.

Since she joined our team the shop has seen a 30% improvement every year which has made my little dream shop actually viable and during every workshop or event she’s behind the scenes facilitating the magic.
When I have the vision but cannot execute it- she does.
If you’re ever wondering how we look so cute at Christmas it’s because during Christmas she turns into an actual elf and makes ALL the magic happen.

Shes been under the weather for the last two weeks but even so has found a way to get us what we need and still spend a few hours staging and we’re missing her EXTRA on her birthday.
Please join me in wishing Tiffany a happy birthday and a year full of HEALTH and happiness.
We don’t deserve her but are sure grateful to have her on our team💖🦄

Lemon lovers cake
Peach cobbler cheesecake
An oven full of pie and arguably the last bits of local strawberries.
I’m not gonna be buying driscolls to keep strawberry pie- so ya’ll better get your fix while you can.

We’re doing the Mediterranean salad with fresh tzatziki and I made a pot of potato bacon soup with garden herbs.

Come eat & shop til 3 today🌦️
