In 2012 we hired a young, lanky, long haired kid who went by SeaBass or Spud, and his sister Cat, to join our front of the house team. From 2012 to 2016 Sebastian worked summers with us and spent winters at the University of Hawaii where he was living on a sailboat and studying Oceanography. While he was there he learned to surf and fell in love with the ocean. ⠀
⠀
In his words "I've been chasing the waterman lifestyle ever since. Jungle man. The last four years I’ve been working as a Kitesurf instructor in Costa Rica, Aruba, Seattle, and Portland . I've also been working as a chef along the way in Portland/Seattle/Costa Rica. Three winters in Costa Rica living on the beach, kiting, surfing, fiestas, running a backpacker hostel, pure life, puravida! I'm also trained trained as an EMT to deal with the crazy kitesurf injury’s in remote Costa Rica. I got stuck in my abandoned resort in Costa Rica during Covid for a bit this spring, then made it to Portland to work for the summer kite season. I recently had to leave the Portland gig via my #vanlife because of the crazy wildfires so my sister, who now lives in NYC, and I decided to meet up in Michigan. Now I am guest starring at The Riv (in the kitchen this time!) before I (hopefully) go down to Baja Mexico to kite instruct for the winter season."⠀
⠀
And that, is SeaBass/Spud/Sebastian in a nutshell... We're so happy to have him and love seeing his face on our line. ⠀
⠀
Welcome back, SeaBass! ⠀

🏡 THE RIVERSIDE INN
As of today The Riverside Inn is home to a shiny new Bipolar Ionization System! Integrated into HVAC systems, the technology utilizes specialized tubes that take oxygen molecules from the air and convert them into charged atoms that then cluster around micro-particles, surrounding and deactivating harmful substances like airborne mold, bacteria, allergens, and viruses.

They also attach to expelled breath droplets and dust particles that can transport viruses, enlarging them so they're more easily caught in filters. It's an active process that provides continuous disinfection.

"The ions produce a chemical reaction on the cell membrane surface that inactivates the virus," Philip Tierno, a clinical professor of microbiology and pathology at the NYU School of Medicine, told Business Insider. "It can reduce 99.9% of microbes in a matter of minutes."

Fall is here and so is our new Spiced Apple Cake!

Our house made spice cake is layered with honey cream cheese and cinnamon apple filling then sprinkled with brown sugar crumble and drizzled with caramel. We love it paired with Verterra Late Harvest Riesling.

The more stunningly beautiful the sunrise & sunset the more we turn our thoughts to the fires raging in the west. At this time we’re supposed to be finalizing our line up for our wine pairing dinners, but wineries in California, Oregon and Washington are facing crisis and can’t be reached. Smoke tainted grapes at this point in harvest is devastating. We know intimately how extensive damage from even a smaller fire can be and we’re keeping everyone in affected areas close to our hearts.

More on smoke taint and how wineries are responding here: https://www.winespectator.com/articles/how-will-weeks-of-wildfire-smoke-on-the-west-coast-impact-the-2020-vintage

We’re busy making plans for the fall and would like to include a series of virtual wine dinners.

Dinners would take place on Sunday nights throughout the fall and would consist of 3 courses prepared by Chef Boerma to compliment 3 featured wines.

Attendees would pick up their dinners and wine at The Inn prior to the virtual tasting hosted by Kate and the featured winemaker.

At this time we have an exciting tentive lineup including local and California wineries.

Is this something you’d be inteterested in attending? Let us know in the comments!

We've seen our fair share of nasty this season, but we've also felt a lot of love and support as well. See a note we received below for an example of how kind and appreciative people can be too.

But first, this is Chef Christine Boerma. She became our Executive Chef this spring amid the pandemic, returning home early from her annual winter migration to instruct at the @italianculinaryinstitute in Calabria so she could quarantine before we opened for the season.

We've gotten rave reviews our on food since she took the reins and we want to make sure when you say "please give my compliments to the Chef" you know who she is. Chef Boerma leads with grace and determination and we're so fortunate to have her creativity and experience steering our team.

And now for the note...

"Hi!

We had an amazing experience at your restaurant and I have to tell you how it was the highlight of our weekend away on vacation!

First, please let your chef know that he/she is incredible!! Food was unique, cooked to perfection and unforgettable! Everyone at our table was in love with the food!

Secondly, we loved the service from our waitress Aurelia!! She was very knowledgeable and personable! We loved her name too! She is a beautiful person!

Third, your wine list is fantastic!!!

The patio in the back was so nice to look out at the water. But I just loved the inside of the restaurant too!

Great job to you running such a great staff and amazing food and wine! Restaurant business is tough but know you are doing an amazing job!

Cheers to all of you! You made my summer in one meal and one evening!

God bless!

Elizabeth B."

Riverside Inn History

Antoine Manseau founded the town of Leland in 1852, and at that time, the town was primarily a logging town. Jacob Schwarz, a German immigrant to Leelanau County, constructed the original Riverside Inn in 1901. Mr. Schwarz had previously been involved in the logging industry, partially owning three different saw mills. As a former resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, Schwarz recognized a potential market for Leland in the summer tourist trade. Wealthy residents of Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati and Detroit were looking for locations for their summer getaways. This wealthy group was just discovering Northern Michigan. Schwarz took his profit from the lumber business and built The Riverside Inn, almost single-handedly.

Jacob Schwarz realized that in order for this area to become a destination for the wealthy tourists, a hotel with “city” amenities would be required. Indoor plumbing, hot water, heat, and electricity were fairly rare in a rural setting such as Leland, but Jacob made sure The Riverside Inn had all this. The wealthy summer residents felt comfortable in the setting, thus, the same guests returned year after year.

Schwarz ran the Riverside Inn until his death in 1917. His wife followed in 1918, and ownership of the inn passed to the couple's daughters, Blanche and Anna. They ran the inn until 1924, when it was destroyed by fire.

Rather than construct a new building, they modified the 1912 dance hall that Jacob Schwarz had constructed previously. The building was moved to face the river, an upper story was added, and the interior was reworked to make a new inn. Blanche and Anna ran the inn until 1957.
