I have been slightly dreading this post- but i feel ready to share today.
I was going to tell you all how, us bakers and small businesses miss out on family and events so much more then you think because of the time it takes. And I guess I still kinda am- we are downsizing and living small to build for our future.
This will mean no space for baking weekly, but it will mean I get to spend so much more time on my kids and S.O.
I have loved baking since I was in elementary school, I never thought I’d turn it into what it has become, and I am so thankful for those who have purchased from me in the last 6+ years.
On another note- I want to be open and honest about the other half of why I want to close my business. The disrespect and disregard to small business owners is overboard. I am a other half and a mom first, but you wouldn’t know I’ve completed orders while my son was in the hospital a couple years ago, or that I completely close off the kitchen to my children when they’re sick (the few times for this I do let customers know) because I’m too scared to ever cancel on someone. I’ve paid out of pocket to the next baker to transfer orders to someone who charges more, to make sure you’re not scrambling last minute. No one asked me too, I know. However I would never ever leave someone hanging for such important moments and memories and I know the public would never let me live it down anyways. I have had people be mad I didn’t create their 3 tier wedding cake because they didn’t pay their invoice for 3 days, now it’s the week of and you want me to complete it in 4 days with my 5 other orders. I’ve had people tell me they’re picking up Friday 5pm, so I make sure we’re home and sitting around, just for them to say “actually sorry we got busy, our party isn’t really till Sunday so I’ll come tomorrow around 2pm”. I used to people please, now I have to be strict and it’s stressful, just for them to be rude back. I have had someone try to tell me I gave them food poisoning even though it was free cupcakes a church donated to them that were store bought and unopened.
I have been told by other bakers that if I would just up my prices, become more strict, take less orders, ect ect that I would not get these types of people, but I promise you there are people with endless amounts to spend that treat us the same way.
The upset of these type of customers unfortunately have not been weighed out by the Respectful and kind ones lately. I feel like I’m losing the love and passion for what I am doing, and that’s a huge problem for me.
The people who have straight copied my work, my wording, my contract, my menu down to exact cakes or giveawaysthat have come from my brain, no ai, no Pinterest. I talked to someone about people not being original because she felt she has someone copying her every move, and a few weeks later she had her best friend copy my business name and just turn the last piece of course cus her initials are KC. When I started baking I researched a name and made sure there was no standing pages longer then mine with the “whisk” or “whisked” in the name form Galveston to Houston, from Baytown to sugarland. I made sure I was original and not copying anyoneeee. It’s very sad to see people don’t have the same integrity or originality.
The feeling of nitpicking things like this don’t align with the person I want to become or the faith I’m trying to grow in and I’m not ashamed to say that. I wish I was someone who could just ignore it, look past everything and pretend it’s not there or happening, but I’m just simply not. It’s not the way my brain works.
Maybe I’m just not as strong willed as some, maybe I’m too emotional, maybe I let things get under my skin too easily. 🤷🏻♀️
All of this to say I’m stressed. The baking industry is stressful. Everything is expensive but (some of) yall want a custom cake to be cheap.
I mentally cannot take anymore rude and disrespectful customers. I want time with my family and years I’m not going to get back. I don’t want the feeling of being in constant competition anymore.
This page will turn into recipes, baking and cooking most likely & who knows what the very far future holds- if you don’t want to stick around for that, that’s okay. And if you want to unfollow me for venting in this post, that’s okay too 🫶🏼
I do want to say, if you’re one who’s been on time, appreciated the work put in, followed me for years, purchased, showed me love, shown me grace, been understanding - trust me I know who you are, I appreciate you, and I’m so so grateful you gave me the opportunity to bake or make for you. 🖤 & if you read everything, thank you and sorry for the very long crazy vent.
