🚔🍦 Buckle Up Kids. Get Rewarded.

Over the coming weeks, Lavonia Police officers will be handing out FREE Dairy Queen cone coupons to the first 100 children (under 17 years of age) we see who are properly buckled up*.

Law enforcement often focuses on correcting unsafe behavior, but we also believe in recognizing safe choices. Our youngest citizens who are riding safely deserve a little positive reinforcement!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of death for children in the United States. In 2023, 1,019 children ages 14 and younger were killed in motor vehicle crashes, and more than 142,000 were injured. Tragically, 43% of the children who lost their lives were not properly restrained.

The good news is that proper restraints save lives. The CDC reports that “Car seat use reduces the risk for injury in a crash by 71–82% for children when compared with seat belt use alone.” They also recommend using the proper restraint for a child’s age and size—from rear-facing car seats, to forward-facing car seats, to booster seats, and finally a properly fitting seat belt.
