Grandma wouldn't give you an empty purse.

Before she handed it over, she might open it back up and slip a coin—or a little money—inside.

Why?

Some families believed you should never give someone a purse or wallet completely empty. Putting something inside was associated with wishing the recipient continued prosperity or ensuring they didn't begin with an empty pocketbook.

This wasn't uniquely Appalachian, and versions of the custom have existed well beyond the mountains. But like so many old folk beliefs, it was carried into Appalachian family life and passed from one generation to another.

And sometimes the tradition lasted even after nobody could quite remember WHY they did it.

They just knew Grandma always did.

Did your family put money in a purse or wallet before giving it as a gift? And what did they say would happen if you didn't?

Nobody announced that you were getting older.

They just gave you a seat at the grown-ups' table.

For years, when the whole family gathered, the younger children might be squeezed around a smaller table, perched wherever there was room, or gathered together while the adults filled the big table.

Then one Sunday, somebody pulled out a chair.

And this time, it was for you.

You tried not to make a big deal about it. You sat there listening to conversations you didn't completely understand, passed the potatoes when somebody asked, and probably tried a little harder than usual to remember your manners.

Children's tables weren't uniquely Appalachian, of course. Crowded family gatherings across America created all kinds of creative seating arrangements.

But for some of us, being moved to that big family table felt like one of childhood's quiet little promotions.

Do you remember when you finally graduated from the kids' table?
