Donald Trump has risen to the top of the Republican presidential primary field in part by manipulating the media. Rather than spending his personal wealth on television advertisements or devoting hours of his days to courting television and print reporters, he has, through the strength of his personality, gotten the press corps to cover him on his schedule and their dime.
There have been tangible benefits for Trump, who has claimed that he is roughly $35 million under budget. The assertion is impossible to actually confirm but supports the idea he’s gotten a ton of free coverage.
“He has gotten hundreds of millions of dollars in free publicity just off of his message, his speeches, his social media presence,” said Elizabeth Wilner, senior vice president at Kantar Media Intelligence, a company that tracks political ad spending.
All of which made his claim ...

Republican presidential candidates are beginning 2016 with a full head of steam in what could be the most critical period for the party in decades. While Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz currently are leading in the national polls of likely Republican voters, it is hard to predict the final outcome of next month's primaries and caucuses.
For political junkies, the Republican race has so far been surprising and unpredictable. Real estate mogul Donald Trump has dominated media coverage and the polls since he announced his candidacy last June. From the very beginning he has exploited voter anger with caustic and abrasive rhetoric. Over the weekend he told a cheering Biloxi, Mississippi, audience, "People are so tired of the incompetence. They're so tired of stupidity." Trump has pledged to deport those who are in this country illegally, to build a wall along the Mexican ...

Going out on New Year's Eve is like braving the wild frontier: everyone must fend for themselves, and you will probably end up dirty.
In this video, one brave bouncer at the Gatsby club in Ontario donned a GoPro to show everyone what it was like to face the barrage of drunken imbeciles who were out and about on New Year's.
Highlights include drunken arguments, and one woman who seems unconcerned with the fact that she's not wearing shoes.

Sacre bleu: French restaurants have been ordered to hand out doggy bags to customers to cut down on food waste.

French restaurateurs have expressed consternation after a new law has made le doggy bag - long considered a dining faux pas in France - a legal requirement.
The new law came into force on New Year's Day, and dining establishments serving more than 150 covers a day are now required to provide doggy bags or a take-away box if a customer asks for one.
It's part of an initiative launched by the French government in 2013, with the aim of reducing food waste by 50% by 2025. Seven million tonnes of food are thrown away each year in France, and the restaurant industry alone is responsible for one million tonnes of food waste.
An opinion poll conducted in 2014 found that 75% of French people were open ...

A Lannister always pays his debts...but apparently, George R.R. Martin doesn't. At least, not in a timely fashion.
In a 1,800-word blog post published over New Year's weekend, Martin announced that he missed his New Year's Eve deadline for completing The Winds of Winter, the 6th installment in A Song of Ice and Fire series.
"THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished,' writes Martin. "Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You're disappointed, and you're not alone."
Some fans are reacting with shows of support. But others have just one question: WHAT GIVES, GEORGE?!
A Dance with Dragons came out in 2012. AND IT HAD CLIFFHANGERS! Sure, the HBO adaptation will pick up in April — meaning that Game of Thrones will officially move beyond the book series. In other words, the show will spoil the books. (In certain storylines. The ...

Oculus VR's trumpeting of the Oculus Rift's upcoming pre-order date seems a little premature for excitement, but it could mean virtual reality fans have headsets in hand in less than a month.
While this may seem speculative, it's based on a discussion with Oculus Vice President of Product Nate Mitchell that came during the company's last developer-focused conference, held in Los Angeles in September. I asked Mitchell why, with a captive audience of VR's earliest adopters at the ready, Oculus had not yet announced a pre-order date or price for the final Rift Consumer headset, which had been making the rounds since June.
"There's no rush to take pre-orders. We don't need your money right now. It doesn't benefit us, and it doesn't benefit you either," he said. "I'm a guy who thinks about user experience all ...

Kourtney Kardashian opened up about dealing with anxiety in a letter she shared on her website Monday.
"When I was pregnant with Reign, I knew that I was going to go hard at working out afterwards," she wrote on KourtneyKardashian.com. "I couldn't wait to feel strong and in shape again. I didn't know that I would be going through a break up and just an overall crazy year."
The mother of three split from her partner Scott Disick back in July after nine years together. Reports circulated about Disick's substance abuse issues and alleged cheating on the reality star.
"Everyone deals with hard times in their lives differently. I'm generally not a nervous person but I get anxious. I also get nauseous and feel like I can't eat when it is really bad, but I force myself to stay healthy."
Kardashian has turned to exercise for relief, and has shared photos of her ...

Intel has made yet another hardware acquisition to build up its business of integrating its processors and RealSense imaging technology into the next wave of connected devices beyond PCs. Today the company announced it has purchased Ascending Technologies, a Germany-based startup that makes small drones and the software used to fly them.
Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed but Intel described it to me as a “small company”. All 75 employees will be getting offers to join Intel, she added.
At a time when there is increasing regulatory and public scrutiny over drone safety and how they will be used, Ascend has touted its own software for its accuracy of movement, using LED-based “light painting” and long-exposure photography to show just how this works. (The illustration above confirming the acquisition was also created ...
