Sophia Club

Sophia Club And what, Socrates, is the food of the soul? Surely, I said, knowledge is the food of the soul.

Sophia Club is the student based philosophy club at New Mexico State University. We organize socials and meeting where students are welcome to join us and find out what philosophy is all about. At the meeting there will be discussion topics posted, via our page, which we will talk about during the meetings in order to allow the views of students to be expressed.

Objections to uploading may be parsed into substrate issues, dealing with the computer platform of upload and personal identity. This paper argues that the personal identity issues of uploading are no more or less challenging than those of bodily transfer often discussed in the philosophical literat…

There is hope!

We talk a lot about the need for good jobs in America, but good-paying jobs often require certain skills. Engineering, science and technical degrees are seen as highly prized, and not without merit.

Hi Sophiates!

Don't forget about Mark Walker's presentation entitled "Externalism, Skepticism, and Skeptical Dogmatism" today in Breland 172 and 4:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

Hi everyone!

Sophia will kick off this month with a presentation by the NMSU Philosophy department's very own, Mark Walker. His presentation is entitled, "Externalism, Skepticism, and Skeptical Dogmatism," will be held on Thursday, September 11th in Breland 172 at 4:00 pm. I hope to see familiar faces, as it will be an intriguing discussion on the nature of knowledge, epistemic justification, and implications of endorsing skeptical dogmatism. For more information, the abstract for the presentation is below:

"A claimed benefit of epistemic externalism is that it alone can avoid skepticism. Most epistemic externalists, however, allow a residual amount of internalism in terms of a defeasibility condition on justification. The paper argues that an internal defeasibility condition is sufficient for skeptics to cast doubt on many claims to justified belief about perceptual matters. Furthermore, the defeasibility condition also opens the door to a darker form of skepticism, skeptical dogmatism, which maintains that many of our perceptually based beliefs are probably false."

Hey Sophiates!

Hope you all enjoyed your first full week of classes and didn't have to take too many quizzes on validity. Don't forget about the social at The Game tomorrow at 4:30! Be there or be square!

Hi everyone!
I'd like to first say congrats to the seniors who graduated last year; we will miss you! For those who are still working on degrees or even just starting them, welcome!

Our first event of the year will be the Southwest Women's Law Center for a discussion on legislation on women's economic fairness this Tuesday August 26th 6:00 - 8:00 pm in Science Hall 109. Anyone with an interest in gender justice, applied ethics, law, politics, or public policy, will find the conversation interesting. Pizza will be served.

Also, Saturday (August 30th), we will be having an event at The Game at 4:30 to talk about new changes to the organization, brain storm future events, and available leadership positions.

If you are new to the group, this will be a great opportunity to introduce yourself to existing members, and decide how much time you'll be able to commit in the future.

I look forward to a productive semester, Aggies!
