Americana Classics Classic cars & trucks. Drive-In and Marquee theaters. Diners, maltshops and classic rock & roll music.

I have a love for old classic cars, both restored and unrestored. I also love old drive-ins, theaters, maltshops and 50's music. I am an avid collector of all these things and have created this page as an extension of my love for the genre.

We found ourselves in Haslett Michigan this week. Our destination was a classic country diner called, Blondie's Barn .
We have driven past this locally popular diner hundreds of times, but have never eaten there. Well, the time has finally come.
The decor, like I mentioned above, is very country classic...Which is quite comforting. The restaurant is clean and tables were quickly bussed, but, I would like to see a little more deep cleaning around the decor hung on the walls and ceiling. This is a common miss for many small and large restaurants...But should be regularly addressed. We've had the unfortunate experience of a big wad of dust bunnies fall onto our food before and that is not a pleasant experience. Outside of that observance, it was the only negative of our visit.
We were there early in the day so Jenifer and I both got the same thing...Eggs (over easy), bacon, sausage, ham, fried potatoes and pancakes. Now, I am a pancake snob or an afficionado, if you will. In otherwards I LOVE pancakes! These cakes were some of the best I've had. They were fluffy in the the center. Perfectly crusted around the edges and delicious. They came with a soft, creamy, whipped butter that always serves well with pancakes. The syrup was a very good maple syrup and I didn't have to ask for extra...Bonus points for that.
The eggs, potatoes, ham and bacon were cooked well and tasted great. The sausage unfortunately was not to our liking...But that is purely just a personal preference thing. I would likely just get all bacon next time, instead of the sausage and ham.
Our Waitress was very nice, attentive and personable. The food came out quick, fresh and the portions were plentiful. Overall, it was a good experience and we would not hesitate to come back.

While out on a short picking trip over the weekend, we found ourselves in Williamston Michigan. We just had to take the opportunity to stop at this cute little cafe...Which just happens to be a cafe that was visted AND revamped by none other than Robert Irvine of Food Networks, Restaurant: Impossible.
The restaurant, Sunnyside Cafe is located in a small strip mall in this quaint little farming village about 15 miles east of Lansing. The decor is bright and welcoming with sunshine, bright flowers and cleanliness.
Running the restaurant on this day were 3 very young employees. Abby, our Waitress. Colin, the Cook. And a Busboy (we didn't get his name). All three did such a fantastic job making sure customers were being taken care of and food was coming out at a reasonable pace. Although it took a little long for our food to come out, it was by no means the fault of the staff...They just needed more help.
Abby, our Waitress was an absolute gem. She was on-point with greeting us, getting us drinks and the taking our order. She continued to check on us while we waited for our food. Even more amazing, she was tending to every table (and there were several tables full of customers) in a very timely fashion. She even helped an elderly gentleman out of his chair. When you have an employee the caliber of this young lady, you do everything in your power to retain her!
Colin, the cook, was a young man that literally had alot on his plate. He was the only one in the kitchen and he remained calm, steady and more importantly he put out perfectly cooked food. Miss Sindee had the biscuits and gravy and she absolutely loved them. I had over easy eggs, pancakes and bacon. Yes, simple dishes to make, BUT, it is amazing how often busy kitchens (with multiple cooks) mess these up. Colin cooked these items to perfection! Another thing we really appreciated about him, besides being so young and competent. He proudly wore a chefs coat. A small detail...But noticed and appreciated.
Kudos must be given to the young Busboy. He was hustling and keeping things neat. I noticed Abby also praising him and Colin on a job well done...Again, totally professional on her part.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, however. We were really hoping they would have had more of Robert Irvines dishes on the menu. Hopefully they will get those on the menu soon.
In closing we enjoyed the food, the comfort of the restaurant and a few of the stories Abby gave us on Chef Irvines visit. But mostly, it was the staff that sealed the pleasantries of our visit.
