🍔 Max & Erma's at Easton in the late 2000s.

Max and Erma Visocnik ran the original as a German Village tavern starting in 1958. Barry Zacks bought it in 1972 and turned it into a chain that hit 110 restaurants in more than 12 states by the mid-2000s. Every table had a telephone so you could call the table across the room, the sundae bar was a bathtub, and the company kept a 6,500-square-foot warehouse of 2,600 barcoded decorations to dress each location, about $40,000 worth per restaurant. The Garbage Burger was 10 ounces under a pile of toppings.

Five locations are left. The only one in central Ohio is in Lancaster.
