The double scoop we didn’t know how much we needed: Derpy and Merv (or, Merpy) ❤️
BUCKLE UP Y’ALL, this one’s L O N G.
Derpy came to the cafe last winter with his two brothers, Saja and Sussie as eight-ish month old kittens. They immediately shook up the vibes with their chaotic kitten personalities and fed off of each other’s wild energies. I personally referred to them as a roving gang of criminals who rolled into town and left a disaster in their wake 😂 they were silly and rambunctious and kept us on our toes (literally, they’d always be under our feet making us trip and fall).
Eventually, Sussie found a family of his own, and then Saja did, too. Derpy was the last Saja Boi left. His tomfoolery partners, gone ❤️🩹
Then the stars aligned, and in came Merv. Merv is a young guy, not afraid of anything, in everyone’s business, and doesn’t quite understand the concept of boundaries.
AKA, perfect for Derpy.
Derpy and Merv became best friends quickly and played all the time, unless they were sleeping close to one another. They loved jumping on each other, pushing in front of each other to get out our Catio door, eating each other’s food, etc etc. Merv was the brother Derpy had been missing, and Derpy was the friend Merv seemed to have always wanted.
The night that Derpy’s new family came to adopt him, I told him a few times “you need to say bye to Merv! Your best buddy! You’re going to miss him 🥺” Derpy was going to a lovely family, but he would be the only cat in the house. I couldn’t help but feel worried that he would be a bit lonely.
When Derpy’s new family came, they were so excited to bring him home. After we’d gotten him in the carrier and were placating him with Churu sticks, Merv ran into the room, jumped on Derpy’s carrier and stared down at him, confused. We could all tell that he wasn’t prepared for this arrangement, where his new best friend was leaving him. I informed Derpy’s adopters that he and Merv were best friends; not bonded, but did love each other.
They IMMEDIATELY began talking about needed to bring Merv home, too.
And then the next night, they did. ❤️
