A few weeks ago, three of our SFMs hit the road for a bit of exploring, fishing and learning. One of the highlights of the trip was getting to spend a full day with Kristen and Nate of Kristen What an incredible experience! The focus was on casting, mending and reading water - and wow were there so many ah-ha moments. THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge and patient coaching. It was such a fun day! 🎣

Yesterday, Sue and I tried our luck at Olallie Lake and had a really nice day. If you look closely, you can see that most of the trees around the lake were burned in a fire a few years ago. However, a fire cannot remove a mountain and the view of Mount Jefferson was spectacular. We rented a rickety old rowboat that we will not soon forget- at least it didn’t leak! Fishing wasn’t lights out, but it was good. We each caught fish in the 11 to 14 inch range and one of us, I won’t mention who, lost a bigger one. The winning fly was a small black wooly bugger-like fly with orange and chartreuse tail using intermediate line. Woolly worm worked well also. The lake is about 2 1/2 hours from Portland, some of it on unimproved gravel that can be kind of rough, so it’s not the easiest lake to get to. However, I don’t think it gets as much pressure because of that. It looked like there were several spots you could actually cast from the bank. The very clean cold water is a beautiful teal blue. I hadn’t been there in 40 years and it brought back some very fond memories for me, and the destination was well worth the effort.

A very big THANK YOU to our many donors, including the local fly shops NW Flyfishing Outfitters Royal Treatment Fly Fishing and The Portland Fly Shop - Your generosity ensures that we can continue to host educational workshops, club outings, and more. We are incredibly grateful for your support! ☀️🎣

What a week! A few SFMs and friends headed north and fished for big ol’ trout on the Upper Columbia River. A huge THANK YOU to the guides, staff and crew Black Bear Lodge for hosting us and to The Evening Hatch - Since 1988 and The Portland Fly Shop for putting this together and inviting us. It was a great experience to fish new-to-us water and to enjoy relaxing down time at your beautiful lodge. We learned a LOT and will be talking about this one for a long time to come!

Wind, wind and more WIND?!? 💨 That didn’t deter our SFMs… we still fished our hearts out and reeled in the bass! Shout out to this die-hard group and especially to the tents - I don’t think we lost a single one. Those were some excellent staking skills put to the test! 🙌
