2020: a year in which several of us felt hopeless. A year in which we searched for good people doing good things in order to find hope and inspiration. If you open your eyes you will be surprised by the amount of amazing souls out there giving to others and changing our world for the better. These are the people I choose to surround myself with because they give me hope that love and kindness is alive and well.

Michelle, Bill, and Peggy with @5loaves2fishlcumc were in our kitchen today learning all about dough and the process of each step. These fine folks inspire us by their mission to feed people by nourishing mind,body, and spirit through love, justice, and service to community. We couldn’t be more happy to play a small role in their mission and the amount of hope that they have given us is overwhelming in the best way possible. Thank you Michelle, Bill, and Peggy for all that you do to make sure that our vulnerable population is cared for❤️

@mfitzkeloll and I had fun in the kitchen preparing for a tasting! Lake Michigan walleye and whitefish......what’s not to love. Always so great to meet our clients in person and hear about their food preferences and their wedding vision. We are so looking forward to our 2021 season and so incredibly thankful for our clients past/present/ and future for keeping us alive and well during this extremely difficult year❤️

I have been radio silent on social media lately ( not that I’m great at doing business posts daily anyways) for multiple reasons.

This season was difficult. We started a new business to weather the storm and then we lost that business due to another storm. My iPad broke, my phone shattered, my laptop is still on some tropical island waiting to be mailed back to me, and then we try to build a house during our most difficult year.

We catered our last event (and to be perfectly honest we ended our seventh year in business with six events) of 2020 last Saturday. It rained in the morning of course and then she got a little gusty with some lightening later on........I mean should you really expect anything less in 2020? Regardless, the event was fabulous and it was so great to be part of not only a stellar vendor team but also be part of a “happily ever after” moment......it’s why we do what we do. I didn’t get one picture of our food......well, it was raining, not sure how to use the new phone, and no idea where my iPad was.......imagine that.

In the meantime, I’m writing sample menus and filling in the last few open 2021 dates. I’m patiently awaiting my custom kitchen cabinets for our new home. I’m unpacking our local artwork. I’m dreaming of the day when I can host my family in my home for a holiday meal. A meal that will be shared with love and laughter.

This year was filled with heartbreak and tears.....I’m choosing to focus on this new house that Vinnie and I will make a home filled with good vibes only.

And just like that, the ashes fly through the air and we end our time as From The Ashes Wood Fired Pizza. What a horrifying yet fantastic and glorious ride it’s been.

This season crushed me from the first postponed wedding, to pivoting a business, to the last storm that finally took the wind out my sails. And as I watched the last pizza dough exit our kitchen today I was able to reflect and actually say that it was the most beautiful mess that I have been part of. You all helped me this season by telling your friends to come pick up a pizza, by showing up on a weekly basis, by sending me words of encouragement......and today by dropping off some flowers, tea, sage, and fresh eggs. You made me smile, you made me laugh, and you made me exit the fighting ring with my head held high. I don’t think you will ever truly understand how grateful I am for you❤️

So peace out.....if you need me, I’ll be burning some sage, having a cocktail, and trying to become a Phoenix rising from the ashes. 2021 I sure hope that you and I can be pals❤️

❤️❤️❤️❤️ oh friends, THANK YOU❤️❤️❤️❤️ In a week where I grieved the loss of yet another business, a week in which I found it hard to give it my best, in a week in which sadness and hopelessness engulfed me........you made me smile today.........you brought me to tears (the good tears), you gave me encouragement, you gave me kindness. Thank you, for everything always......most importantly your love, your care, and your support during the most difficult season that I have experienced. I will forever be grateful for your presence in my life❤️

With that said, you helped us fly through some of our labor of love prepped goods and we’re sooooo close to being sold out........but I have enough product to try this one more time. So come see me tomorrow from 12-3 at 1460 N. Eagle Highway to build your own pizza kit. I hope you all had a blast making these with your loved ones and I hope you created some special memories in the kitchen while doing so.

It’s with a heavy heart that I say, From The Ashes is officially done for 2020. The rainstorm we had last night and this morning did some extensive damage to our setup and as the business owner I had to say to myself “know when to walk away”........

I can’t thank all of our customers and community members who helped not only build a business but also helped me keep a few main staff members employed of Island Thyme Catering during this difficult year. Without your love and support I was looking at losing my company. Instead you all gave us a life ring and allowed us to float through these stormy times.

I don’t know what 2021 holds for From The Ashes but I can promise you she will be operational in some capacity. Stay tuned as we figure out a way to have two businesses running.

We will miss your lovely faces, we will miss your kind words, we will miss feeding you. We are signing off with hearts overfilled from the support you have given us.

Our time as From The Ashes is coming to an end. We have two more weeks friends before we need to transition and bring some magic to the few weddings that are still taking place this season for Island Thyme Catering. So make sure to catch us this week or next week (September 5th will be our last day) for your wood fired pizza needs. For all of our meat loving friends, we finally listened to your requests and we bring you the meaty pie........and to our vegetarian friends we still have the Apollo’s Ember and the Leelanau Grown pizzas for you. It’s Friday and for the first time ever I’m going to attempt a #fridayintroductions story.

I’m Kristy and I own Island Thyme Catering. I was born and raised in Lake Leelanau, and I now live and work 4 miles from my childhood home. The one place I can always find solace is on the water, and I was and am lucky enough to have a family who has been able to keep a little inherited piece of lake frontage on the south end ofLake Leelanau. That lake frontage holds a piece of my heart. A place where I learned how to swim, how to fish, how to ice skate, how to drive a boat, how to tube, how to canoe, how to tie a knot, how to build a fire, how to forage wild berries, how to catch lightning bugs, how to take a dock out, how to camp......and seriously just how to simmer down and take a breath. It’s a place where I have learned that sometimes work needs to wait because there are memories to be made with family members. That sometimes the only thing you need are a hammock, a good book, and the sounds of the water upon the shoreline. A place where I connect with my family. A place in which we can share a meal together. A place where life is measured by the moments that take your breath away.

I’m not going to lie, this pandemic took a little part of soul away. But as I was sitting at Fountain Point today writing our social media post (a historic resort across the lake from my family’s little piece of heaven) I watched as guests were creating their own memories with their families. Watching them have cookouts, kids learning how to row and swim, building sandcastles with their siblings. They were laughing, loving, and creating memories that they will reflect upon when they are old and gray. Yes, they too will take a little magic home with them.

I’m Kristy, and I needed to see these beautiful moments today..... it made me remember that even in these chaotic times that it’s still important to create some magic with the ones you hold near and dear. That life is short and you better take time to soak up all that makes you happy. Happy Friday......now go make the most of it❤️

Peachy......that’s how we feel when Michigan peach season finally arrives (and I may be slightly biased as I get to call one of the best peach growers in our area my brother). We couldn’t pass up bringing some peaches to our menu with the new salad Just Peachy.....Loma Farms mixed greens paired with a grilled peach stuffed with Idyll Farms goat cheese, candied walnuts and toasted almonds, red onion, and champagne vinaigrette......and don’t miss out on Matt’s sweet corn slaw (I was lucky to be a taste tester yesterday and it was fabulous). Thanks Loma Farm, Bardenhagen Farm, Grant’s corn, and Leelanau Cheese. Chef Matty wanted to do some extra baking this week, so look at those amazing cinnamon rolls and mini bread loaves he whipped up! Last day to have this tasty pie, The Miss Steak (not going to lie, today felt like one mistake after another), but this pizza is no mistake......rosemary chili flank steak, green peppers, red onion, Leelanau Cheese peppercorn formate blanc, and herb olive oil......yes please, this is one “Miss Steak” that I want to have in my life. What a beautiful day in Leelanau! We’re here at Fountain Point until 8 tonight for your pizza and salad needs. It’s the last week of the Loma Rainbow Salad with carrot ginger dressing, choppin’ 🥦 salad, the Bee Mighty Pizza (thank you Mighty Miss Maya for letting us name a pizza after you❤️), the Pizzaz, and the 3 little pigs pizza........so if you love barbecue pizza come hit us up today and tomorrow. Stay tuned on Tuesday for our new creations.

Island thyme is the best food I’ve eaten in AGES. Eat their strata and moms homemade bread and you will add ten years to your life. They cook with LOVE regardless of the amount of people. I would recommend them for any time you’d want to eat, especially with other people. They are also very good at working with allergies and food preferences (eat the tofu scramble, vegans and non vegans it’s so good!). They have raised the catering bar. Thanks!!!
