This is how Island Thyme brought in the New Year❤️. It takes a village and I’m seriously in awe of the amount of love and care that every volunteer brought to creating this meal. Stay tuned in a couple of weeks when Chef Matt and I take on preparing a meal in Our ITC kitchen........sounds like a perfect way to start our 2021 season ❤️

Kristy Lorraine from Island Tyme Catering lead us in a New Years Appetizer night. We are grateful for ALL who spent hours helping to prepare this meal of love. There were some big smiles tonight. 😀🙏✌️

“Sometimes the worst thing that happens to you, the thing you think you can’t survive… it’s the thing that makes you better than you used to be.” ― Jennifer Weiner, Fly Away Home

Yes, the season known as 2020 was most certainly my worst case scenario. So many times in which we felt that we could no longer keep our head above water. A season that included loss, transformation, and then followed by more loss. We were grasping on to anything that made us feel hope. It wasn’t just the loss of our season but the state of our world that led us to feeling grief and sadness. Don’t get me wrong, we had several great things happen as well.......things that allowed us to give each other a high five and give us enough strength to keep fighting the good fight. At the end of our season there was still a heaviness that was felt.......still some pain......still some broken dreams.

We had two choices: sink or swim. The best way for us to swim was for us to pour our hearts into something that we believe in. To be the change we want to see. To be active in our community.

So when we finally tied up the bits and pieces of our season we hopped on board with 5Loaves2Fish........and here we find ourselves prepping food for folks who are battling food insecurity (can we admit that this shouldn’t even be a thing)......we find ourselves gifting our time to the greater good, because those small groups of thoughtful and committed citizens is how we be the change we want to see.

This coming week we have a goal of creating a sense of normalcy for folks who currently don’t have food in their pantry’s and no roof over their head. Island Thyme is going to prep food items with the other volunteers that will mimic a New Year’s Eve appetizer party..........our beet arancini, our spanakopita, our Mediterranean Display, our aromatic meatballs with chimichurri..........yes, this is how we shall end our 2020 year.

We have the fullest hearts over here and we are so incredibly happy that we found this organization. It was and continues to be exactly what we need in our lives.

So, a few pictures of what this charitable organization has been up to. Bill and Michelle, you are amazing and I can’t thank you enough for putting such love and care in all that you do❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

May your holidays be filled with love and joy ❤️

2020 was a year......harder for some than others. A year in which I felt that I was losing a little piece of my soul. A year in which I was starting to lose some tenacity. A year in which I really had to question my perseverance. I needed a way to replenish my soul.......I needed to find a place for my heart to land.

I first found 5Loaves2Fish during the pizza truck days......when we needed to find a quick home for the unused food items. A relationship was born from that day and now my husband is working on building them a food trailer so that they can serve an even larger population. When my heart was ready, I finally went into their kitchen to volunteer my time. A kitchen that is filled to brim with love and kindness. Spending time prepping food for people in need has been one of the most fulfilling things I have done this year.

A charitable organization like this requires the heart, soul, and hands of many to thrive. An organization that nourishes our most vulnerable population with food and love. There are no gifts too little! Love to bake.......FANTASTIC, there are several people who can’t wait to eat your cookies! Have some pantry items you don’t need.......there are families who will put them to good use. Have some warm clothing gear you don’t need.......there are folks in need of socks, coats, and boots. Have the gift of time......we can’t wait to see you! Have some fresh produce and other groceries you want to donate......they can be packed up to go to families battling food insecurity. Are you artistic......AMAZING, we need love notes to deliver with every meal. And yes, financial donations are always appreciated as well!

I invite you join me as a volunteer......I promise you will feel your heart grow two sizes❤️❤️. 2020 was hard and winter is hard.......but this is one way to warm the heart and soul. XOXO

We did it! We built a house during a pandemic. Everything that could possibly go wrong did. We still don’t have all of our appliances from orders created five months ago. What we do have: full hearts, a pond full of mallards, and a lot of hope for a completely finished house by 2021! We shall call this home plot Mallards Way and we are over the moon with our new home and new friends 🦆❤️ #newhome #laboroflove #adiostaintmuch #sunrisesandsunsetsohmy

The 5Loaves2Fish Phenomenon; Support Leelanau's Neighbors In Need

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” ―Winston S. Churchill

Truer words were never spoken. This was a year in which I struggled to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Many moments where giving up felt like the best case scenario. Several days or maybe even months where I felt like I was sucker punched.

When I came to the complete realization that having two seasonal businesses wasn’t feasible I felt like a little piece of my soul was turning ash color. What was the point.......why did we just put ourselves through that business pivot.....why is this happening.........all questions with no answers and just having to believe that the universe is unfolding as it should. When we crossed paths with 5Loaves2Fish I started to feel joy again. I started to regrow a little piece of my heart........yes, giving what we could to them was exactly what I needed in my life at that exact moment. Michelle, Bill, and Peggy inspire. Their hearts are bigger than most. They do incredibly amazing work throughout our community. I’m looking forward to the near future when I can finally volunteer with them but in the meantime this is how Vinnie and I are able to show our support.

Giving Tuesday is just around the bend friends and if you are looking for a local 501C3 to support please consider helping.......from monetary donations to the gifts of food or your time.......all are needed and all are greatly appreciated. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The off season: a time to put gardens to sleep, a time to catch-up on Quickbooks, a time to get a haircut, a time to see doctors (and oh so many doctors) and a time to have yet another hand surgery......which gets me out of raking today.

Yes, the off season is a time for self care.

GTPulse: Not Your Average Church Kitchen - 5loaves2fishes Feeds The People - 9 & 10 News

When it became a complete realization that operating From The Ashes Wood Fired Pizza and Island Thyme Catering in 2021 wasn’t feasible (for multiple reasons) Vince and I chatted about selling the truck. The hard part of this decision is that I didn’t want it to go to just anybody. Chef Matt and I put a lot of our heart and soul in getting the truck up and running and it no doubt became our child.

After we lost our setup at the truck during that August storm we needed to find a home for all of the pizza product we were sitting on. The stars aligned and I saw a post from 5Loaves2Fishes about a meal that they had just made.......and it was pizza nonetheless. We quick called them up and had them swing by to fill their pantry with pizza fixings. Later that week Vince came running in after reading a newspaper article about Michelle’s work and said “babe, I want to donate the truck to them”.......I fell in love with this idea as I knew the truck would be cared for and that each meal she produced would be filled to the brim with love.

Although the goal has changed.......stay tuned to hear about that........their mission remains the same. We are so incredibly grateful for the presence of 5Loaves2Fishes in our community and constantly in awe of the good work these fine folks do❤️

I was raised Baptist. That’s a wrap.....well for a little bit at least! Today we sent @mfitzkeloll off for a nice 1.5 month r&r trip with his family. This fella deserves it.....we made just over 4000 pizzas together, a few food drops, a few weddings, a few tastings, did a few hundred appetizers, rewrote a lot of contracts, braised a lot of meat, ordered a lot of food, wrote a lot of prep lists, drank a lot of lattes, pivoted a business and went back to another business, and worked a couple thousand hours together this season. Yes, he deserves a little rest. Thank you Matt for all that you do for ITC, thanks for being in it to win it, thanks for pivoting, thanks for always accepting a challenge, thanks for being like the little brother I never had. Have a great trip and cheers to our 2021 season🙌🎉❤️

2020: a year in which several of us felt hopeless. A year in which we searched for good people doing good things in order to find hope and inspiration. If you open your eyes you will be surprised by the amount of amazing souls out there giving to others and changing our world for the better. These are the people I choose to surround myself with because they give me hope that love and kindness is alive and well.

Michelle, Bill, and Peggy with @5loaves2fishlcumc were in our kitchen today learning all about dough and the process of each step. These fine folks inspire us by their mission to feed people by nourishing mind, body, and spirit through love, justice, and service to community. We couldn’t be more happy to play a small role in their mission and the amount of hope that they have given us is overwhelming in the best way possible. Thank you Michelle, Bill, and Peggy for all that you do to make sure that our vulnerable population is cared for❤️

@mfitzkeloll and I had fun in the kitchen preparing for a tasting! Lake Michigan walleye and whitefish......what’s not to love. Always so great to meet our clients in person and hear about their food preferences and their wedding vision. We are so looking forward to our 2021 season and so incredibly thankful for our clients past/present/ and future for keeping us alive and well during this extremely difficult year❤️

I have been radio silent on social media lately ( not that I’m great at doing business posts daily anyways) for multiple reasons.

This season was difficult. We started a new business to weather the storm and then we lost that business due to another storm. My iPad broke, my phone shattered, my laptop is still on some tropical island waiting to be mailed back to me, and then we try to build a house during our most difficult year.

We catered our last event (and to be perfectly honest we ended our seventh year in business with six events) of 2020 last Saturday. It rained in the morning of course and then she got a little gusty with some lightening later on........I mean should you really expect anything less in 2020? Regardless, the event was fabulous and it was so great to be part of not only a stellar vendor team but also be part of a “happily ever after” moment......it’s why we do what we do. I didn’t get one picture of our food......well, it was raining, not sure how to use the new phone, and no idea where my iPad was.......imagine that.

In the meantime, I’m writing sample menus and filling in the last few open 2021 dates. I’m patiently awaiting my custom kitchen cabinets for our new home. I’m unpacking our local artwork. I’m dreaming of the day when I can host my family in my home for a holiday meal. A meal that will be shared with love and laughter.

This year was filled with heartbreak and tears.....I’m choosing to focus on this new house that Vinnie and I will make a home filled with good vibes only.

And just like that, the ashes fly through the air and we end our time as From The Ashes Wood Fired Pizza. What a horrifying yet fantastic and glorious ride it’s been.

This season crushed me from the first postponed wedding, to pivoting a business, to the last storm that finally took the wind out my sails. And as I watched the last pizza dough exit our kitchen today I was able to reflect and actually say that it was the most beautiful mess that I have been part of. You all helped me this season by telling your friends to come pick up a pizza, by showing up on a weekly basis, by sending me words of encouragement......and today by dropping off some flowers, tea, sage, and fresh eggs. You made me smile, you made me laugh, and you made me exit the fighting ring with my head held high. I don’t think you will ever truly understand how grateful I am for you❤️

So peace out.....if you need me, I’ll be burning some sage, having a cocktail, and trying to become a Phoenix rising from the ashes. 2021 I sure hope that you and I can be pals❤️

❤️❤️❤️❤️ oh friends, THANK YOU❤️❤️❤️❤️ In a week where I grieved the loss of yet another business, a week in which I found it hard to give it my best, in a week in which sadness and hopelessness engulfed me........you made me smile today.........you brought me to tears (the good tears), you gave me encouragement, you gave me kindness. Thank you, for everything always......most importantly your love, your care, and your support during the most difficult season that I have experienced. I will forever be grateful for your presence in my life❤️

With that said, you helped us fly through some of our labor of love prepped goods and we’re sooooo close to being sold out........but I have enough product to try this one more time. So come see me tomorrow from 12-3 at 1460 N. Eagle Highway to build your own pizza kit. I hope you all had a blast making these with your loved ones and I hope you created some special memories in the kitchen while doing so.

Much love friends........thank you❤️

It’s with a heavy heart that I say, From The Ashes is officially done for 2020. The rainstorm we had last night and this morning did some extensive damage to our setup and as the business owner I had to say to myself “know when to walk away”........

I can’t thank all of our customers and community members who helped not only build a business but also helped me keep a few main staff members employed of Island Thyme Catering during this difficult year. Without your love and support I was looking at losing my company. Instead you all gave us a life ring and allowed us to float through these stormy times.

I don’t know what 2021 holds for From The Ashes but I can promise you she will be operational in some capacity. Stay tuned as we figure out a way to have two businesses running.

We will miss your lovely faces, we will miss your kind words, we will miss feeding you. We are signing off with hearts overfilled from the support you have given us.

XOXO From The Ashes team

Our time as From The Ashes is coming to an end. We have two more weeks friends before we need to transition and bring some magic to the few weddings that are still taking place this season for Island Thyme Catering. So make sure to catch us this week or next week (September 5th will be our last day) for your wood fired pizza needs. For all of our meat loving friends, we finally listened to your requests and we bring you the meaty pie........and to our vegetarian friends we still have the Apollo’s Ember and the Leelanau Grown pizzas for you. We’ll see you at Fountain Point tonight from 4-8.

Island thyme is the best food I’ve eaten in AGES. Eat their strata and moms homemade bread and you will add ten years to your life. They cook with LOVE regardless of the amount of people. I would recommend them for any time you’d want to eat, especially with other people. They are also very good at working with allergies and food preferences (eat the tofu scramble, vegans and non vegans it’s so good!). They have raised the catering bar. Thanks!!!
Nice PR, Island Thyme! 🌺
