The artist David Hockney made a career looking at things that already existed and turning them into something uniquely his own. Picasso, the Brothers Grimm, Wallace Stevens. He admired, he conversed, he reinterpreted. The work was always in dialogue with what came before it and yet entirely, unmistakably his.⁠

That is, more or less, the story of this room. Inspiration, not imitation. An undeniably British concept, reimagined inside a Tudor-style inn on Chicago’s North Shore and brought to life with the same color, confidence and wit Hockney brought to his work.⁠

When shaping the collection that would fill these walls, Hockney felt inevitable. ‘Gold’ and ‘The Blue Guitar’ reflect the spirit of the collection and the room itself: distinctly British in character, layered with references and history, and grounded in tradition while still expressing a point of view entirely its own. ⁠
