Sure it hit 95° that day, but that didn't dampen the spirits of AJ and Delaney! Their friends and family stayed until the very end to make sure they felt all the love in the room. What a night!

Kid from Reno. Discovers punk rock at 14. Learns the music world is vast and the best stuff takes work to find. Moves to Boulder, falls in love with house music, buys Technics 1200s. Says no to playing Britney at a frat party. Clears a dance floor at a house party playing music he loves while everyone waits for Michael Jackson.

And then — slowly — figures out that those two things don't have to be in conflict.

That you can stay genuinely excited about what you're playing and still give the room what it needs. That open format DJing is one of the most creative things you can do behind the decks. That a great house remix of a pop track is its own art form. That Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" is a genuinely great song. That Justin Bieber at Coachella is worth watching all the way through.

Punk rock taught me to dig deep. The house music era taught me what it means to really DJ. The years of stubbornness taught me that serving the room is the craft. And discovering open format taught me you don't have to choose.

You know it's gonna get a little rowdy when they're handing out hot dogs and cold beers before the ceremony even starts!

It was a scorcher yesterday, but that certainly didn't slow down this crew! We went hard until 11, and they just wanted to keep going!

Clue #1 was the very unique request that were put in by the guests. Rattlin' Bog, Rock n Roll McDonalds, Love Sosa...

Clue #3 was the number of Pit Viper shades being rocked by the gentlemen...

Last Saturday's wedding was simply fantastic! The location was so beautiful, the wedding couple incredibly lovely people, and the guests just wanted to throw DOWN.

I had talked beforehand with the couple about strategies to pack the dancefloor, and we ended up going with a reverse anniversary dance, where we started with the two couples that had been married the longest (52 years each!) and then added couples as we went down in anniversaries. It worked like a charm, and as I was literally 10 seconds from dropping into the first banger, the photographer lets me know that the sunset was incredible and people should go outside for pictures.

No problem! I pivoted strategies and just played fun tracks for the few remaining people inside, and the dancefloor slowly grew as people finished outside. I announced when the newlyweds had entered the building, got them right in the middle of the crowd, and put the pedal to the metal with banger after banger.

For their final send off I asked if they wanted me to film it since their videographer was no longer there, so I was able to capture that special moment for them! I made sure to stay crouched down so that I wasn't in the photographer's shots.

Here's what I eventually figured out. There were two separate things I needed to work through — and I'd been treating them like they were the same problem.

The first: I actually like pop music. I just hadn't admitted it yet.

Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" is an absolute banger. Once I stopped filtering it through the "am I supposed to like this" test and just listened — I loved it. Turns out my taste was always broader than I was letting on.

The second was bigger. In 2024 I started really leaning into open format DJing — mixing across genres, weaving different worlds of music together in a single set. And it's genuinely one of the most fun things I've ever done behind the decks.

Take a house groove, blend it into a pop track, pull out a great remix that bridges both worlds — you're not compromising either one. You're doing something more interesting than either one on its own.

And when you build a trust with the audience, that's when you can start to take some risks and make the real magic happen...

Had my first ever back to back weddings this last weekend. This was Friday's. A smaller wedding with about 55 guests. The couple wanted a dance floor with some surprises, and I saved the biggest one for their last song.

When I put on Odesza's "A Moment Apart" I overheard the groom let out a little laugh and say "Nice one Dave!" They had their second date ever at an Odesza concert, and I thought it would be a fantastic way to end a magical evening.

This Friday come dance with us at Ghost Box Pizza!! I got so many questions at the last Art Night Out if I was doing the after party. We couldn't pull it together in time last month, but IT IS ON for this Friday!

Come find me Friday during Art Night Out, and I can get you a BOGO (buy one, get one) coupon for that night. I'll be volunteering at the beer tents from 6:30 to 8:30.

Music will run from 9:00 pm until late. I play tracks from across the decades and also take requests. The Art Night Out organizers and volunteers typically join once they get everything put away.

I was DJing a frat party in the early 2000s. A girl asked me to play Britney Spears.

I said no.

My justification was completely sincere: we were hired as house music DJs. That's what we did. You wouldn't hire a jazz quartet and ask them to play country.

It was not a reasonable position for a frat party. But I held it.

And that pattern kept going. Years later, an old college friend asked me to DJ her house party. I agreed — with the understanding I'd play what I loved. She said fine. I showed up, played my set, and her guests were... not into it. Eventually I caved and played Michael Jackson. The room came alive immediately.

Standing there watching that happen, I realized I hadn't figured out how to do both. How to bring my genuine excitement about music into a room while also giving people what they actually needed.

That was the real problem. And solving it took longer than I'd like to admit.
