Just FYI- You can determine if your plant is male or female, long before you have invested all summer in them and ruined your neighbor's crops. Once your plant gets about 18 inches tall, cut it's light down to 12 and 12. You can cover plants with a trashcan, put in dark closet, shed, etc. Just make sure you do it at the same times. Within a week- maybe two- you will see the indications of s*x. Once you know- get rid of the boys, keep the girls and crank their light back up.

Okay newbies- this is a crucial time. Your plants are almost done and budding. You're getting excited and can't wait... Here is something else you need to be on the lookout for- Bud-mold. Cold damp nights can cause it and not enough air flow. The biggest nicest looking buds are the most at risk. Check your buds. Give them a gentle squeeze. Look out for soft spots, mushy spots, black areas within the bud. If you catch it in time, you can cut off the bad buds and quickly harvest the rest before affected. If you don't catch it in time- you could lose the entire glorious plant- and that's a heartbreaker, especially when so close. Examine your buds.

Molasses has never failed me as a soil additive. Just a tablespoon into a gallon of rain water adds valuable nutrients and can be mixed with more nitrogen specific fertilizer. Molasses contains potassium, selenium, copper, magnesium and others. It's also available at most grocery stores. I only grow organic and Molasses is a must.

So, you're at the end of your first crop. How do you know when to cut? This is a very difficult question for newbies. There is no easy answer. It actually is dependent on the rhizomes and what color they are. Rhizomes are the protruding shoots that come off the bud. These very tiny things start out like mini clear mushrooms. They turn to cloudy and then to amber. It is during the cloudy phase when you want to cut. How do you know for sure? Well, many people have tiny magnifying glasses that help them really see it. What happens if you cut too soon? Well, for one- you will notice right away when your hands and scissors are not covered in resin. It should be very sticky right now. What happens if you cut too late? It will lose it's effectiveness and it also might turn musty and moldy as the weather turns cold and wet. The perfect time to cut isn't a one day event. The cloudy period can last about two weeks and in that time the buds you cut soonest- should have a more Sativa effect. And the longer you wait will give a more Indica effect. The strain of cannabis also gives you a guide in how many weeks it should take to bloom or bud- but this is only a guide. Many things can affect this timing when you are growing outdoors. Was the plant ever in shade? The sun moves with the season, so if plants were in the sun in July all day- doesn't mean they are in September. That is why your best bet is to check those Rhizomes. Good luck.

If you see this in your garden- congrats- it's a boy! Now kill that little mo********er- unless you want seeds.
