Just visited NOSTALGIA Antiques and Decor
at 100-B West Washington St. on the northeast corner of the Kosciusko court square (across the street from Presidents' Inn BnB.)
They have some fantastic antique furniture pieces that would blend with your other antiques or serve as an accent to contemporary furnishings. I very much enjoyed browsing!

KOSCIUSKO: GATEWAY TO AMERICA'S SOUTHWEST FRONTIER

According to the U.S. Parks Service, the original Natchez Trace is one of the oldest transportation routes in North America, and its human use dates back 10,000 years. By the mid 1700's, the area known as Red Bud Springs to the indigenous Choctaw Indians (now Kosciusko, MS) was recognized by travelers along the Natchez Trace as the gateway to America's wild Southwest frontier offering food and drink, lodging, trade, gambling and more. This is our beloved town, our history, our culture, and we delight in sharing it with others. Some of Kosciusko's historic sites are described in a free audio/video tour guide (just google www.badhossmaps.com/kosciuskomobiletour). All of these sites are located within walking distance of one another on or near the original Natchez trace in downtown Kosciusko. To make your walking tour even more interesting and exciting, please request a copy of the map in which historic sites are numbered to correspond with discussion in your audio/visual tour guide. Free maps are available at the Kosciusko Chamber KAP office, 101 N. Natchez St. on the original Natchez Trace, phone 662-289-2981. Just pick a pretty day and stroll through history at your leisure. #11 (Storer House) on the audio/visual and map is the Maple Terrace Inn, #9 (Niles House) is Martha's Cottage, and #10 is the Judge Henry C. Niles House, all of which are on the National Historic Register and part of the Maple Terrace system of bed and breakfast inns. There is no better way to experience Kosciusko's history and culture.

AMAZING DAY AT ROTARY as three fantastic professionals discussed Kosciusko's Project SEARCH, a one-year transition from school-to-work for high school grauates, ages 18-21, with mild to severe intellectual or developmental barriers. There is no cost to students for this very valuable training with the objective of providing meaningful job placement with salary.

Our speakers included Ms. Sandra Jamison (photo, left), Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services Job Skill Trainer, who provides training to students as necessary and appropriate throughout the one year program and even, when needed, after the student receives a salaried job position!

Ms. Dawn McLellan (photo, center), Kosciusko School District's Project SEARCH instructor, spoke on her passion to help each student reach his or her potential so that desirable, salaried job placement and retention is possible. One of her great joys is obviously the success of her students!

Ms. Kelly Quick (photo, right), Kosciusko School District's Transitions Liason, begins recruiting students to Project SEARCH even before high school graduation. When students are struggling to make their way in the world, this dear lady reaches out to provide the kind of hope and assistance that changes lives. Her dad, Dr. Kenneth Quick, recently hired a young man whose long time goal has been to work in a veterinary hospital. Many throughout Kosciusko know this Project SEARCH student who trained at Sunflower Grocery where he warmed the hearts of customers with his friendly smile and eagerness to please. All who work with the public should strive to be like him. In his own way, he's actually teaching us!

Rotarians applaud all who make Project SEARCH possible in our community:

NEW ARRIVALS AT THE HAMMOND HOUSE, circa 1837:

Have you stayed at the Hammond House yet? If not, you're missing one of Kosciusko's hidden gems. This cottage inn is on the original Natchez Trace traversed by the Choctaw Indians, early settlers and General Andrew Jackson whose Volunteers camped nearby while traveling home to Tennessee following their resounding victory at the Battle of New Orleans. The 1837 structure on the site was home to William Jesse Taylor Hammond, a confederate war veteran twice captured, who survived to establish the Kosciusko Ice and Coal Company and a granary which were vital to this early community.

Mrs. Abigail Pribbenow, a Wm Jesse Taylor Hammond descendant, has donated his favorite rocker and a quilt handmade by his daughter, Mary Hammond Potts, in 1959. Yesterday afternoon, both artifacts arrived in very good condition from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They appear to be right at home in the Hammond House where they are now on display for our guests. Thank you Ms. Abigail!
