As temperatures drop, we want to share an important tip to help protect your new home:
🚫 Please don’t salt your driveways, patios, or sidewalks.
Here’s why, in simple terms:
Concrete may look solid, but it’s actually porous. That means it absorbs small amounts of water. When that water freezes, it expands. Over time, this freeze–thaw cycle puts stress on the surface.
🧂 Salt makes the problem worse
It causes ice to melt and refreeze repeatedly as temperatures fluctuate, increasing surface damage
It chemically reacts with concrete, breaking down the surface and leading to flaking, pitting, and cracking
The tricky part? This damage often doesn’t show up right away. It usually appears after a winter or two as peeling or rough, crumbling spots.

Sand or kitty litter for traction
Shovel early and often
If melting is necessary, use products labeled safe for new concrete
A little extra care this winter goes a long way toward keeping your concrete looking great for years to come.
