Yom Kippur has ended. The fast is behind us, and now we look toward Sukkot, the Feast of Booths. For us It begins at sunset this Saturday 26th of September.

The change in mood is striking. Yom Kippur calls us to humble ourselves before Yehovah. Five days later, Sukkot calls us to rejoice before Him.

Yehovah commanded Israel to keep this feast for seven days, beginning on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. His people were to gather branches, dwell in temporary shelters called sukkot, and remember how He made the children of Israel dwell in booths when He brought them out of Egypt (Lev 23:33–43).

Those temporary shelters carry a simple reminder. Our homes may feel solid and our plans may feel secure, but our lives are still in Yehovah’s hands. Israel crossed the wilderness without permanent houses, yet they were not abandoned. He led them, fed them and remained with them.

Sukkot is also called the Feast of Ingathering. It came when the produce of the land had been gathered in (Exod 23:16; Deut 16:13). After the work of the harvest, Israel was told to rejoice before Yehovah. And the command is wonderfully open-handed. Sons and daughters, servants, Levites, outsiders, orphans and widows were all to share in that joy (Deut 16:14).

For our family, keeping Sukkot means setting up a temporary shelter and spending time in it through the week. We eat there, read Scripture, talk, pray,
play, fellowship and remember.

Sukkot also points our hope forward. Zechariah 14 speaks of the nations going up to worship the King, Yehovah of Hosts, and to celebrate Sukkot. Rev 21:3 looks toward the day when God’s dwelling is with humanity.

So now we prepare for a week of joy. Life is not always easy, and our plans do not always work out. But Yehovah carried His people through the wilderness. We need to remember that He is still faithful now.

“So you will rejoice in your feast” (Deut 16:14 TLV).
