This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, so the staff won't be dressing up (you never know about Friday). Either way, dressed up not, the staff still has to work, a 'point' that Mrs. Spanky makes abundantly clear.

NEW: Pollo Asados Tacos: Two tacos marinated with ancho chili, oranges, limes, garlic and more; served with fries $9.99. We aren't trying to sound fancy, but this just looked delicious, so we had to do it. We can also make a Asado sandwich with fries for $9.99

VIKING POST 2 of 2: John (last post) was happy to see that Kurt came back last week and had a Viking as Kurt puts down a LOT of Vikings for North Carolina. Well after John left, guess who should show up again? Kurt. And yes, another Viking for North Carolina. That's four Vikings in a row for North Carolina, but I 'think' North Carolina needs three more to pass Pennsylvania for second place; NOBODY is catching Virginia this year. (In the background we have one of our top Spanky's Facebook fans watching Kurt). Kurt gave her his Viking sticker; pretty cool, right???

Many (is it many?) years ago Mrs. Spanky or I would leave Spankys early to meet the school bus. One day, right after Mrs. Spanky left, she called and said, "Just so you know, there's a guy outside with a real monkey." I had to check it out. I remember the customer tossed a hushpuppy into the air, and the monkey caught it and (as in the picture) he ate it. When you've been in business for 24 years, you see a LOT of things.

Mrs. Spanky and I have too many animals; yes, every dog that needs adopting touches your heart; but we were done. And then our daughter showed us a picture of Vigo; she walked him and said, he’s about a year old, he’s super calm and he doesn’t bark (even now it’s rare for him to bark). The part that broke me was this. Our daughter said, “After the walk, we brought him back and he got so sad, he thought he was coming home with us.” He couldn’t go home with our daughter as her apartment doesn’t allow pets. I had this vision of a dog thinking, “I’m out of here, I have a real home,” and the sadness he must have felt. We agreed that Vigo (who is now Koda) could stay with us for the rest of the year and next year (which is now this year) she could get a different apartment. I was hoping that Brooke wouldn’t take him back to school, but he is now a East Carolina dog. Koda is back at our house for the week and when he gets lonely he gets hungry. I look at our sofa, our new recliner (almost as bad) the missing floor and then I look at Koda and I say, “It’s all right, stuff is stuff, but your are something special.” WARNING: adopting a dog is a lot of work, it’s not for everyone, but sometimes a dog will touch your heart even when you think your heart is full.

FUNNY BUT TRUE: We bought a new Square system last March BUT Mr. Spanky doesn’t want to use it until we slow down as transitioning is STRESSFUL!!! Our current system isn’t tied into our credit card machine, but the new one is (less steps in the long run). Yesterday I was trying to figure out refunds, and I typed in a hypothetical. Since the new machine is linked to the credit card machine it made a real refund and credited a customer with a refund of $4.52 (Opps and I’m glad I didn’t type in $452 although I doubt it can refund more than a customer spent). We don’t want the money back, BUT one lucky customer was the winner of $4.52 and I’m sure there will be more fun as I learn the new system.

I didn’t want to hurt Matt’s feelings on Friday BUT it appeared that Matt's carrying case was, in fact, a pocketbook. I then realized that Matt did, in fact, have a pocketbook, BUT he was running to catch a customer. In all seriousness this wonderful message was sent to us, “Shout out to Matt for finding my pocketbook under the table today and running out to catch me in the parking lot before we left!! This could have been a disaster if I’d lost everything in that bag!! We love Matt!” And we love our staff; great job Matt. A Spanky's romance: Our niece Caitie lived across the street from us for most of her life. When Caitie was old enough, she spent many summers working for us. One day we gained a customer who kept showing up ALL the time. I thought the young man, whose name is Jason, loved our food, turns out he was far more interested in our niece. Five years ago, on this day, they were married and at the wedding they told this story. It REALLY doesn't feel like five years ago!!! Bonus picture of Mrs. Spanky with Caitie.

VIKING UPDATE 1 of 1: North Carolina's pace had really dropped off, but over the last few days North Carolina has bounced back. Today Allen finished a Viking for North Carolina.
