When I first thought of the idea to do a, Go Fund me campaign my motivation was clear. I needed to figure out a way to pay my bills support my child and maintain my business for a month without income. I had heard of GoFund me but didn't exactly know how it worked. Then I saw some friends doing it and said what the hell its worth a shot. So I wrote a happy little paragraph about a profession I happen to love, posted online, and pushed enter. To my surprise Ive had a few donations. From good friends, and family that wanted to help me out. I felt Happy and grateful. Then I felt guilty, because I know that so many people, especially on my home island of St Croix, and the rest of the Caribbean, have been through so much worse. Then I thought well thats actually a reality of almost everyone,always, someone else always, has it so much worse, and thats pretty much a constant. However this logic didn't make me feel any better, or at all help to ease my seance of survivors remorse.
Then I had an idea. A deal I could make with myself that would allow me to do what was needed with the tools available, to survive my own crisis, and to still be able maintain my own seance of civic responsibility.
So here's what I came up with. If by some miracle I actually raise the 3,847.00 dollars that I actually need to maintain myself without any income for a month, give or take 47 dollars. I pledge to donate what ever money is raised above and beyond that, to a reputable fund set up to help the people of St. Croix, Puerto Rico and the rest of the Virgin Islands... and, I'm pretty sure I can live with that.
