Key West is home to plenty of local legends, but few have left a mark quite like Ernest Hemingway. ๐Ÿ“

During his decade on the island, he penned some of his most renowned works, including "To Have and Have Not," "Green Hills of Africa," and "Death in the Afternoon." He also constructed the first in-ground pool in Key West: a lavish $20,000 investment in 1937 that almost led to his financial ruin. Hemingway frequently enjoyed drinks at the original Sloppy Joe's Bar alongside his fishing buddy and bar-owner Joe Russell. ๐Ÿป

Most notably, Key West celebrates his birthday annually with Hemingway Days, featuring a running of the bulls and a look-alike contest where over 100 white-bearded men in safari shorts compete for the title of "Papa" for a weekend.

Some places hold their history like a garden holds down roots. ๐ŸŒฟ

Built in the 1800s and once called the Gardens Mansion, this Key West treasure was reimagined in 1930 by Peggy Mills. Peggy demolished 13 buildings, collected plants from around the world, and legend has it, started it all by planting six coconuts upside down!

Known in Key West as "The Lady of the Orchids," Peggy created what became one of the area's first tourist attractions: a lush botanical garden open to all.

Today, the pathways she designed are paved with 87,000 century-old bricks she collected from Cuba, Honduras, and England. Walk them and you'll feel every bit of that history beneath your feet.
