During the baking process small pieces of this pearl sugar caramelize and form a delightfully sweet, slightly crunchy coating on the outside of the waffle. The flavors of Liege waffles are contained inside the dough making additional toppings unnecessary. The waffles are sold in waxed wrappers and eaten out of hand.
