Curbside Farmers Market on 55th Street, a Saturday in the summer of 1934.

We're on the north bank of Pike Creek, looking south down 7th Ave. 55th Street is in front of us, the Isetts Building is on the right as a notable survivor from the 1930 demolition of the Bain Wagon Factory.

Beginning in July 1934, the City of Kenosha sponsored farmers markets in a different spot every day of the week, except Sundays. The task of organizing was assigned to Felix Mayer, who was the city sealer. That's the person responsible for inspecting devices which rely on weights and measures for selling to the public: the guy who inspects and puts the sticker on gas pumps and grocery store scales so you can be reasonably sure you aren't being illegally cheated in that manner.

Mondays and Thursdays were at Columbus Park. Thursdays and Fridays on 69th Street near Anderson Park (modern St. Joe's). Wednesdays at Union Park. And the big one was Saturday, on 55th Street between 6th and 8th Aves.

The popularity of farmers markets would decline after WWII and through the rest of the 20th Century. But would become extremely popular again in the early 2000s as the idea of the farmers market merged with the public market, with both farmers and small businesses being welcome. And that trend is still going.

Kenosha HarborMarket opens today.
