HOMICIDE UPDATE, SUSPECT ARRESTED- Since the murder of a 16-year-old in the 1100 block of W. 10th Avenue on December 3rd, KPD Detectives have been actively following leads. Detectives developed probable cause to arrest a 15-year-old male from West Richland for the murder. Working with the Benton Couty Prosecutor’s Office, a warrant was issued for the suspect for Murder in the 1st Degree.
Yesterday evening, KPD detectives, with assistance from the FBI, were able to track the suspect to a residence in Union Gap. With the assistance of the Union Gap Police Department, Yakima Police Department, Yakima County Sheriff's Office, and Yakima Valley Crisis Response Unit, our Major Crimes detectives and Criminal Apprehension Team (CAT) served two search warrants in Yakima County related to this case.
Two residences, one in the 400 block of W Pine St in Union Gap and the other in the 16900 block of Summitview Rd in Cowiche, were secured by the Yakima Valley Crisis Response Unit and searched by detectives. The 15-year-old murder suspect was in the Union Gap home and safely taken into custody. Fi****ms were located at both locations and seized as evidence. The murder suspect was transported to Kennewick and booked into the Benton Franklin Juvenile Justice Center for Murder in the 1st Degree.
A second suspect in an unrelated case was also arrested at the Union Gap residence. 20-year-old Andres Medina-Garcia, the second suspect in the Hubby’s and The Hub burglaries, was booked into the Yakima County Jail.
Investigating complex cases like this demands significant dedication and resources. It is imperative that we hold those responsible for this senseless act of violence accountable. We are fortunate to serve in a region where law enforcement agencies routinely collaborate to apprehend suspects and resolve cases. We know those relationships are crucial to providing the professional police services we strive for every day.
We would like to sincerely thank the Union Gap Police Department, Yakima Police Department, and Yakima County Sherrif’s Office for their assistance in this case. Despite the crime not occurring in their area, all agencies were committed to apprehending this suspect and they went above and beyond to make it happen. Without their timely help it is likely we would still be searching for this homicide suspect.
The homicide investigation is still ongoing, and we are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Detectives at 509-628-0333 or www.kpdtips.com
