The Guest House

The Guest House Our neighborhood restaurant features local, seasonal Pacific Northwest inspired menu items, Washingto

The Guest House is a dream come true for owners Amanda & Kevin Kearney. Amanda named the business after a personal space she grew up with - a gathering spot for friends and family over many years, creating special memories. Kevin is a professional chef and has long desired a place of his own. A veteran of open kitchens, he looks forward to establishing a local, neighborhood clientele with whom he

can share his love of good quality, fresh ingredients and specialties of the Pacific Northwest. They hope you will dine with them often and feel right at home (minus the chores)!

Friday, 12/27. Our final service at The Guest House is about to start. 7 years (well technically 6 years, 343 days but who’s counting?). Longer than the average for a restaurant but not as long as we had hoped. There will be a more extensive post in the days to come - but a quick thanks to all it have supported us and especially to all the folks we have worked with. We have bread for sale today and will also have bread for sale tomorrow morning (assuming tonight ends at some point - or maybe it will go straight thru). It’s been fun.

We are sad to announce that the LAST DAY of service for The Guest House will be Friday, December 27th. We have done our best to make it work but just have not been able to overcome the significant headwinds of the past few years.

We are immensely proud of what we created and are so grateful to the neighborhood community for all the love and support we have received on this journey.

We are especially grateful to all the members of our restaurant family over the past 7 years. They poured their hearts and souls into this endeavor making it such a special place filled with warmth, sincerity, and hospitality.

As you know, we tried to pivot our operational hours a couple of months ago in an effort to monetize more of the hours that we were there. Well, for the remainder of the time we will be open we are going to pivot back to the old hours. Starting tomorrow, Thursday, 12/12 we will no longer have lunch/all day service. We will be open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday opening at 4:00. We will bring back brunch starting this Sunday from 10:00-2:00. Next week will be dinner Wednesday to Saturday and Sunday brunch. The final week we will host brunch on Christmas Eve from 10:00-2:00 and our last 2 dinner services on Thursday and Friday. Confusing? Annoying? Silly? A resounding ‘yup’ to all three. But we’re in the home stretch and keeping pace best we can to get across the line. We will continue to be walk in only – except for Christmas Eve brunch. We will take reservations for that service and will do it manually with pen and paper. We kindly ask that you submit reservation requests for that day only via email at [email protected]. We will continue to offer very limited Take Out for the remaining days – we invite you to consider coming in as our primary focus will be on the dining room.
As much as this closure is a business decision, it is also a life decision. We love and adore The Guest House and what we created. We are deeply saddened at the thought of ending it. But we are eager to take the next steps in life together as a family.

The restaurant is closed this week to enable much needed family time to reflect on what we’re most thankful for. We wish you all a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you next week as we usher in December cheer! 🎄

The bomb cyclone has me thinking of the earliest days of the restaurant and our journey to becoming The Guest House. Thought I’d share some photos from the construction period. It’s truly amazing that it went from that to what it became.
So we got power back around 1:30. We are working hard to get everything set to open this evening. We are aiming for 4:00. The menu will be limited - we’ll do what we can as best we can. Come on by and grab some food and drink.

Well we have been quite lucky in the past when the restaurant was spared from power outages that hit the area. But this bomb cyclone was a different beast. We have been up here hoping to get power back but there is so, so much for the hardworking crews from PSE to tackle. 🤞we will be back at it tomorrow. And a heads up/reminder that we will be closed all next week for our Covid/post Covid annual thanksgiving time off.

Howdy. So a couple of things. 1.) As many folks have noticed and commented on, we are no longer running the Fried Chicken sandwich as part of our daily menu. But we’re going to bring it back tomorrow (Sunday 10/6) for Fried Chicken Sandwich Sunday. Available after 1:00 and until supplies run out. We may do this again from time to time
B). The picture on the wall in the café. A few folks have asked about the subject. It is not me. It is actually a German journalist covering the war in Ukraine. This painting was hanging in my old restaurant in Easton, MD where Amanda and I met - . One of my old coworkers saw it and pointed out to my other teammates that she thought it looked an awful lot like me. The term doppelgänger was used. Of course they were going on the mental image of a much younger me from 18 years ago. Our very dear friends Amy and Richard bought it as a gift for us. Just thought I’d try to clear that up. And as I’m typing this I feel like also need take a moment to shout out OOTF. Still going strong in Year 24. With folks who have been there for a good number of those years. It’s a rare restaurant that can make it that long period. And to have people who want to take the ride with Amy for that long. Thru Covid. And moving locations - to tremendous new home. Huzzah and kudos to you all.

I hope you can swing by tomorrow. Doors open at 11:00am, chicken sandwiches available after 1:00.

Wednesday, 9/18. National Cheeseburger Day. With that in mind, we give you our house burger - an 8 oz. Double R patty, Jack cheese, green chili mayo, caramelized onions, shredded lettuce on a house made bun and served with crispy fries. We are pairing it with a beer (draft or can) for $25. We are also running a lamb burger with grilled halloumi cheese, tzatziki sauce, and arugula.
One other housekeeping note - we will be closed tomorrow, Thursday’ 9/19 for a Private Function. Back at it on Friday.
Thanks so much.

Metathesiophobia – the fear of change
Insanity – “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting differerent result” – Albert Einstein. With those two concepts in mind…
We opened The Guest House on January 18, 2018. We operated for 2 years close to the model we had in mind – a cozy restaurant serving simple, fresh food, local beers and wines and craft cocktails. A place where the neighbors could come for lunch, brunch, dinner. That was all upended in March 2020 as it was for everyone when Covid entered our lives and changed things forever. We have spent the last 4 ½ years trying to navigate this new world. Two years as the restaurant we dreamed of, more than twice as many as something else. It can’t be news to anyone that the labor market has shifted – perhaps no industry has been affected more by a lack of labor as the restaurant industry. Supply chain issues, cost of goods, etc etc etc. We have spent these last 4+ years trying to operate The Guest House as we did in Februrary 2020. At least with the hope that we could return to that time. It’s been 4+ years of trying to bang a square peg into a round hole. We’ve tried all sorts of things to bang it in there. We tried a hammer. Then a mallet. Then a sledgehammer. Finally, it dawned on us that perhaps no matter how hard we swing, the square peg just isn’t going to fit in the round hole. What we’re doing and been doing isn’t working – on any level. Not financially. Certainly not in terms of quality of life – physical, mental, emotional. So, we’re going to pivot with what we’re doing here. We are going to embrace change. Experts tell us that change is actually really good for us – it gives us the potential to grow, to learn, to discover new opportunities. ***Continued in the Comments***

Hello Neighbors - we are bidding farewell to our Wed-Thurs host, Noelle, as she heads back to college next week. We are in search of a hire for this role and have learned that the best hosts are often adults with no restaurant experience but who love people, understand customer service, and are quick with smiles. If you or someone you know have these qualities and can keep track of lots of details, this could be a great opportunity for a part-time gig. The host works 3:30pm to approximately 8pm. Primary obligations are managing reservations, greeting / seating guests, answering the phone, and updating menus. Anyone interested should email [email protected]. Thanks!
