At Jinjeeh Coffee, we’re working hard to get back on the road, reconnect with our community, and keep doing what we love—serving coffee, tea, and blue corn donuts across the Navajo Nation. Over the past month, we’ve raised $1,600 toward our $6,000 goal for a reliable vehicle that can help us make our 500+ mile weekly route. There is a high startup cost for this part of the business that was reinvested right back into supplies for unroasted coffee beans, packaging, shipping, and new merchandise.

We had hoped to join a weekend event in the valley, but the entry fee was higher than all our Navajo Nation Fair events combined. Since we’re dedicated to keeping our prices affordable—like our best seller, a $2 cup of coffee—we decided it wasn’t the right fit.

In the meantime, we’re here roasting, crafting new merch, and looking forward to the day we can be back in the community full-time! DM us for coffee orders or just to say hello—we’re grateful for your support on this journey.

Jinjeeh Coffee Fundraiser

Ya’at’eeh shí’buddies, this is Daniel. My personal vehicle that I have been using for Jinjeeh Coffee popup events is no longer in a drive-able condition. I have always worked hard for what I have and need to replace my car so that I can get back on my weekly route for popup events, and return to serving indigenous communities across the southwest.

I do not feel like it is ok at all to outright ask for donations from the community, especially since rent was due this week. I am doing a fundraiser for a down payment on a used vehicle (SUV/truck) that I can use to get back to work. In order to reach that goal, I am selling fresh roasted coffee beans, Jinjeeh Coffee ceramic mugs, and I will be printing tote bags soon.

Jinjeeh Coffee has a DIY/punk ethos as a brand. We are definitely not asking for hand outs. We had a few events that we confirmed for that we are not able to show up for over the past few weeks. We have upcoming events in multiple states and tribal communities that we want to show up for. Our summer sales were down to 40% of what they were last year, and our opportunities to expand what we do as a brand improves as the weather cools down.

We have an obligation to the communities that we serve to be transparent about how those funds will be used, and if we make enough, we hope to upgrade equipment to improve our menu offerings.

Thanks fam, we miss serving you.

Just another gentle reminder, we do not get notifications for Direct Messages on the Facebook platform. For whatever reason, we've had a lot of difficulty with DMs for this account over the past year. We have reached out for support and can't get past Meta's content management verification steps.

So in short, Facebook Messenger is the worst way to reach us.

PRESS RELEASE

July 8, 2024

CHIEF PROPANE CLOSED BY THE KAYENTA DISTRICT COURT; KAYENTA TOWNSHIP COMMISSION AWARDED $720,000 IN DAMAGES FOR BACK RENT

On June 12, 2024, pursuant to Court order, the Kayenta Township locked the business gates to Chief Propane in Kayenta, Arizona. In a Forcible Entry and Detainer action brought in 2020 by the Kayenta Township Commission against Royal Churchill d/b/a Chief Propane, a defunct Arizona corporation, and against Royal Chief Towing LLC, and Chief Propane & Accessories Inc. (collectively “Chief Propane”), in Case No. No. KY-CV-026-2020, on May 14, 2024, the Court ruled in favor of the Commission and issued a Writ of Restitution and Warrant of Removal to restore possession of the property to the Kayenta Township.

For almost 15 years, Chief Propane operated profitable towing and propane businesses on the Township’s lands without a business site lease.

The District Court also awarded the Commission $720,000 in damages, based on the holdover rent provision of Chief Propane’s business site lease, which was terminated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 2010 for Chief Propane’s material default of the lease terms.

Because Chief Propane was a defunct Arizona corporation at the time of the lease cancellation, the Kayenta District Court held that Royal Churchill was the successor lessee on the cancelled business site lease as a matter of law, with the individual responsibility to pay the Township the holdover rent. Chief Propane did not appeal the decision to the Navajo Nation Supreme Court.

After 2010, Chief Propane had repeatedly failed to provide the Kayenta Township requisite documentation to obtain a new business site lease, failed to pay rent, and twice ignored civil trespass orders issued against it under the Township’s Civil Trespass Ordinance. Both civil trespass orders were enforced by separate lawsuits brought by the Commission in Kayenta District Court.

One of those lawsuits is still pending. The Commission prevailed on the other lawsuit and was awarded a little over $90,000 against Chief Propane in a judgment entered by the District Court in 2020.

The Kayenta Township is currently inventorying the property remaining on the premises and anyone in possession of propane tanks and/or equipment from Chief Propane should promptly contact the Township administration to have such property inventoried.

Kayenta Township is a home rule municipality and political subdivision of the Navajo Nation, with the “duty authority, and responsibility to perform all functions necessary for local self-government.” 2 N.N.C. §§ 4082-4084. The Kayenta Township has jurisdiction over lands specifically withdrawn for the Kayenta Township by the Navajo Nation Council, as confirmed by the Navajo Nation Supreme Court in Kayenta Township Comm’n v. Ward, 9 Nav. R. 481 (Nav. Sup. Ct. 2011), which stated: “By broad grant of power, the Township’s control over its withdrawn land includes the right to govern its lands according to local ordinances and necessarily includes the possessory right” to its lands. Id. at 486.
