As summer temperatures rise, the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division wants to remind residents that a vehicle can become dangerously hot within minutes, even with the windows cracked.

Unless your plans involve a pet-friendly destination such as a veterinarian appointment, dog park, or another pet-centered activity, please consider leaving your pets safely at home.

Every summer, animals suffer serious medical emergencies and even death after being left inside hot vehicles for “just a few minutes.” Pets rely entirely on their owners to protect them from these dangerous conditions.

In addition to placing your pet’s life at risk, leaving an animal in a hot vehicle may result in:
• Cruelty to animal charges
• Seizure of the animal
• Emergency measures taken to remove the pet from the vehicle, which may also result in damage to the vehicle

If you see an animal in distress inside a hot vehicle, call 911 immediately.
