A 114-year-old Michigan paper mill sat largely empty for more than two decades. This weekend, thousands of people walked back through its doors, and some former workers returned for the first time since the mill closed.

The Plainwell Paper Mill shut down in November 2000. The 255,000-square-foot complex at 211 N. Main St. eventually came into city ownership, waiting for someone with a plan big enough to bring it back.

This summer, Darius and Rimante Grigaliunas, owners of Classic Auto Factory in Illinois, bought it from Plainwell for $1. The city had intentionally held that price for a buyer with the right vision.

On Oct. 3, the newly named Michigan Classic Auto Mill celebrated its grand opening. Classic cars filled the old factory floor beneath tall ceilings, exposed brick and remnants of paper-making machinery. Outside were more cars, food trucks and family activities, while part of the mill became an elevated concert stage.

Among the visitors was George Brown, who started at the mill in 1973 after leaving the Army and eventually became shipping superintendent. He had not stepped inside in nearly 26 years.

The owners envision much more than cars. Future ideas include indoor space for the Plainwell Farmers Market, festivals, trade education and a seasonal outdoor terrace.

For former workers and longtime locals, however, simply seeing people inside again was remarkable. One visitor from Otsego had ridden past the building for 65 years and had never been inside until Saturday.

Michigan has plenty of old factories with stories locked behind their walls. Plainwell just unlocked one of them.
