In the interest of disclosing the truth to our customers and the community, this sign that is posted in the window of our old location is false and an attempt to shift the blame onto the county. The owner of the building decided to no longer allow us to move forward with renovations that were over two years in the making and that were already approved by the county. The goal of the renovation was not to become a sit down restaurant but to make the space more efficient to accommodate the increase in tourism Joshua Tree has experienced over the years and to bring an old building that needs a lot of work up to the current San Bernardino county code.
Our lease was up and the new terms offered to us were for a one year lease with provisions against making any improvements to the building. The new terms also required the separation of the space into two units with only one unit being offered to us, thus increasing the rent for half the space. All of the money we spent on permits, plans, and equipment for a remodel she previously approved were for nothing and the lease terms she offered would not allow us to operate in any real capacity to sustain the business. We explored the logistics of staying open in that location but it was clear we were no longer welcome or wanted in that space. It is unfortunate, but that is the reality of what happened.
We are moved by the outpouring of love we’ve received since we closed. It means a lot to us to know that all the hard work we put into the business is seen and appreciated. 💚
