Got Time for a story?
So this morning dawned beautiful and I thought I would finish mulching. Then I saw dad at the little greenhouse so I went and had a morning catchup…He says if the kids are bored, they can drag these branches to the fire pit. I grin…my dad’s idea of kid’s entertainment hasn’t change much from when I was a small.
I take a gander at where the branches lay…trying to judge their proximity to the greenhouse and the likelihood of asking them to do it without causing damage. They are a bit away so I turn with Dad and gaze at my children at play in the yard. They make quite a pleasing sight, as the sun peaks over the tree bathing them in gold, they are side by side practicing their golf swing.
Talls is doing well with a nice straight drive down the yard, but smalls is struggling,. I go to help…I try to get him to understand how to stand and that it’s not about how hard you swing but a nice smooth swing….sigh ….which is how I found myself clutching my head and trying to sooth the child who thought he killed me and calling the one who told me last week he wanted to be a doctor.
I send Talls for ice and when he arrives with it my hand sticks just a bit, so I send him for a rag and his grandma. He is a while coming back so I yell for him, he arrives back and kind of yells at me… I let him have it “ don’t you yell at me I just got hit in the head with a 3 wood, only one of us is allowed to be upset at a time and it’s MY TURN.”.. (not my finest moment)..he reports gramma Mare left I ask him to call her…afraid to take the pressure off as head wounds tend to bleed and I need not scare Smalls anymore. Talls reports Mare left her phone…
I sit down, well damn it’s a Sunday…I call the Red-head, “ whatcha doing?”
Her answer is the same as always “cleaning, Why?”
Well…
I wait…sitting next to the mulch bag clutching my head as melting ice runs down my arm…. the future doctor goes back to golfing.
Mary and Teri arrived at the same time; Teri says I need stitches…they back and forth about who is stuck with me and who is stuck with kids.
At the Er they asked if I needed a note for work…I told them the boss is well aware of what happened…I took my two staples and Cat scan, stopped at Walmart and picked up a new coffee maker, spinach and a new bandanna for my head.
At Walmart the red head says it will be faster to scan the items on my Walmart app…I don’t want to and she insists it will be easier and I will thank her for setting it up…I resist, She askes (as she has on a number of occasions)“why do you always have to be such a b***H?” I wonder if it occurs to her that she always asks me this when shes trying to push me into s**t I don’t want to do…I let it go, after all she’s my ride home and she loves me.
I made work on time…I have a headache…
Anyone know if the er offers frequent flier miles?
How you guys?

With a stomp of the foot one kid just yelled at the other “ why do you have to ruin everything?!!” pretty soon it will be summer vacation and they will get to be together every day…all day… can’t wait.
In other news we got the deck scrubbed down and are adding the flowers soon

Here are the plans for the weekend…you ever eat something you remember for years? Years ago I had a Salmon dish in Minnesota that I never forgot, this is my attempt to copy it.
In other news at least one person thinks I am a genius…the oldest child is spending a good bit of time and thought trying to catch me. The other day it was “Mom what starts with T ends with T and is filled with T?” When I came up with the answer his face was full of awe at my brilliance. Last night it was “ Mom I bet you don’t know this one…Is there a town is New Mexico called Santa Claus?” I went with yes, both based on the nature of the question and the word Santa. He was stunned “how did you know that?” he asked in exasperation.
I am going to go and be brilliant in the kitchen now… in the same way I do most things, by just winging it with confidence.
We will be closed May 24th through June 3rd. In the meantime come eat and when you don’t know what you are doing just go with it.

It’s Wednesday evening, the rain has come and gone, the sun is peeking through…everything is fresh and green, the kids are all tucked in and I am free to watch the day fade. I am sitting here on the front porch listening to the birds chirping (in between the revving of the car parked and running in dad’s driveway).
What have I got for you this evening other than my refusing to go to work May 24th thru June 4? We will be closed for a little staycation due mainly to the fact that my tank is a bit empty…
Work has been pretty good…our dish guy moved on, so we ( I ) have been picking up some of the slack. Lisa is still limping around a bit, so she isn’t yet back to five days a week. Julie has been ill, so everyone has stepped up to cover her shifts. Frankies partner has landed a new job making childcare challenging (and him perpetually late for work)…not sure what I am to do there…I can hardly fault them for wanting to better themselves or demand he leave his small child home alone…so I have just been working harder and looking for help, while you folks keep coming to dinner. The new computer system has been challenging but helpful.
On the home front there has been a lot going on. The oldest child has had ortho appointments in both Somerset and Pittsburgh for his foot and finger (both are fine) along with his allergist appointments both in Somerset and Hollidaysburg. Smalls has had his wellness check and quite frankly all is not all that well as he has been experiencing migraines and some behavior issues that he can’t seem to get under control… so that has taken some extra time and attention. Phone calls both to get help and partnering with the school to support him as best we can.
On top of all that there has been a plethora of end of year things, meetings, field trips and what nots.
I also had out of town company for two days and managed both to go to dinner and mulch the front flower bed…that made me happy but has left little time to write to you let alone work on a book or paint…it will all come around…at the moment my life seems to consist of driving the car somewhere for something, missing my turn, back tracking and managing the various neurodivergences of my household…for all that I am in a remarkably good place in my head, life is full and the bills are, for the moment, at least paid…so please forgive me while I take a bit of time to decompress.
Maybe I will be funny tomorrow…
Give yourself and everyone else a break when you need to, pick up the slack when you can, know when to take a step aside…
I will post our specials tomorrow
Thanks for your support and patience and for trying out the online ordering, I love you guys.

The Headlines
We will be closed Mother’s Day as I try to do things well and due to our size Mother’s day would be difficult to navigate and having work 20+ years of them I know running a restaurant that day is no fun, so I am not.
We will be closed Sunday the 24th through June 3rd reopening the 4th for Vacation. In previous years we have done this over the Fourth of July but I feel this will work better for myself and staff. I hope you understand and spread the word.
The other stuff…
This has been another week of just going and going.
Three doctor appointments for the kids…the walk-in cooler went down and had to be fixed (and food thrown away and repurchased) on top of all the other stuff…
The Staff... Julie has been sick and Lisa is Limping slightly less, the rest of the staff have been amazingly helpful cover ( and putting up with me), still I need to hire two people or so…
I am feeling a bit burnt out this week, so I am calling it and looking forward to a staycation during which I hope to get a bunch of stuff done that I want to do.
In other news I have been replanting my strawberries over the last weeks and yesterday I noticed two almost ripe. I took a good look, and they still had a pale spot, so I thought one more day, reveling in the anticipation and wonder of a ripe strawberry in the first week of May. Then later last evening Small’s came running into the house to announce he’d found a ripe Strawberry and ate it…sigh.
Stay well, stay patient, don’t steal Strawberries, know when to take a break, come to dinner, spread the word.

Here are the specials I hope they tempt you to come out and see us.
I somehow made it through a very full week and am about to start another, I don’t seem to know whether I am coming or going lately…clear missed a Chiropractor appointment, Lady called and said do you realize you missed this an My reply was not until the phone rang…sigh.
When my phone rings now and people start with How are you before laying problems at my feet, I just say a bit overwhelmed…might as well admit it, still I did a few mental health things.
I managed to finish this drawing of Emerald Park, (which was also Castagna’s and now Shorty’s). Cool piece of local trivia it used to sit on old route 30 but when that township went dry, they just picked the building up and moved it across the township line.
I also took the child for a ramble in the woods during which I made poor decisions, and we ended up on the wrong side of the swamp…we figured it out and saw cool stuff. Also went on the annual Birthday Ramp walk with the Redhead during which I got caught by a rose bush, sis had to rescue me as that jerky rose had me by the hat..all in all not a bad week.
Hope yours is going well
Admit when you’re stressed
Stay out of the jaggers
Look where you are going
Figure it out
Come eat
