Let Me Tell You About
Jellico’s Jelly Rolls
(By Gail Douglas Garrett)

Wilhelm Bartholomew and Marie Meier Siegrist were both born and raised in Germany. They both came to the United States as teenagers. They got married in Bernstadt, Kentucky. They came to Jellico in 1894 and established The City Bakery. Their business was located on Fifth Street directly across from where the Jellico Public Library is now (2024).
Mr. Siegrist had learned his trade in Switzerland and it wasn’t long before his Sunny South Bread and Jelly Rolls were famous throughout the region. One long time resident of Jellico told me that his Jelly Rolls were as big around as a grapefruit and as long as your arm.
By 1906, City Bakery had more than doubled in size. A newspaper article from that year described the huge oven which completes a 360 degree rotation as it bakes. The City Bakery had the entire trade of Campbell and Whitley Counties. They supplied baked goods to all the large mines throughout the famous Jellico District.
Mr. and Mrs. Siegrist were the parents of three children. William Fred (Bill) worked with his father in the bakery. He moved to Memphis for some time returning to Jellico during the 1960’s and working as the City Dispatcher.
Mr. Siegrist died in August of 1929. Hobart Williamson and Tip Sowder tore down The City Bakery sometime during The Great Depression and built what would become The Economy Service Station.
Mr. Siegrist and Bill are both buried in the Siegrist Family Plot in Jellico Cemetery.
***NOTE: The pictures of the bakery are copies of photos from the Jellico Public Library. The colored photo is current and shows the location of the bakery.
