Today we vacated the space that we occupied for 19 mind-blowing years. Yes we cried, yes we looked around with wonder, yes we heard the ghost sounds of a full house with clinking glasses, bursts of laughter, tasty tunes on the speakers, and cranky chefs. It is so hard to say good-bye to a baby that you nursed and cherished for two decades and then must let it go.
We have you to thank, and the staff, and the gracious and sometimes unknown people who helped us along the way in good times and bad. The strangers who happened upon us and became friends, the travelers who found us by accident, the faithful who came so regularly that we should have named a dish or a table after you. You've brought us fame and fortune and everything that goes with it, and we thank you all.
And as is our custom on our anniversary, having just completed 19 years, we look heavenward and thank all those who passed through our doors and dined at our tables, but are no longer with us. Our celestial cheering section. They include our parents, relatives, good neighbors, and loved ones of yours, too. They are the grace that guided us with a hidden hand even when we thought we couldn't get through one more existential crisis, and brought us to a soft landing that allowed us to depart calmly, lovingly, on our own terms with all of you still by our sides with your hugs, your conversation, your wine, your gifts, and most of all, your love. No greater gift exists than the love you--and they-- have showered on us, even though sometimes we didn't quite feel deserving of it.
So today we thank those departed to That Side, from This Side, for helpfully getting us to the finish line.
For today, and forever, in memoriam:
