The Struggle Behind Owning a Small Business
Owning a small business is often described as the American dream. People see the freedom of being your own boss, setting your own schedule, and building something that belongs to you. What they do not always see are the long hours, financial pressure, sleepless nights, sacrifices, and constant uncertainty that happen behind the scenes. A struggling small business is not simply a business that is losing money. Behind that business is often a person or family fighting to protect something they have spent years building.
For six years, I have experienced the good days and the bad days of owning my own business. There have been moments when business was strong and I felt proud of everything I had accomplished. There have also been days when sales were slow, bills continued to arrive, expenses increased, and I wondered how I was going to keep moving forward. Running a business teaches you quickly that hard work does not always guarantee immediate success.
One of the greatest challenges for a small business owner is that the expenses never stop. Food, supplies, fuel, equipment, insurance, maintenance, permits, taxes, and countless other costs must be paid whether the business has a great week or a terrible one. When customers see the price of a meal, they may only think about the food in front of them. They do not see all the expenses and hours of preparation required to serve that meal.
There is also an emotional side to struggling in business. When you have built something yourself, the business becomes personal. Every successful event feels like a victory, while every slow day can feel like a failure. You begin questioning yourself: Am I doing enough? What can I change? How am I going to pay everything this month? Can I keep going?
Those questions can follow a business owner home at night.
Small businesses also depend heavily on the communities they serve. Every customer matters. When someone chooses a locally owned business, they are doing much more than purchasing a pizza, sandwich, meal, or service. They are helping someone pay employees, maintain equipment, provide for a family, and keep a dream alive. That is why community support can mean so much to a struggling business owner.
There can also be frustrating moments when a business is invited to an event to sell a particular type of food, only to discover that competing or outside food has been brought into the same event. For a large corporation, losing a few customers might mean very little. For a small food business that has purchased ingredients, spent hours preparing, traveled to the location, and paid operating expenses, those lost sales can make the difference between making money and losing money that day.
Despite these struggles, owning a business can teach a person perseverance. There are days when quitting might seem easier than continuing. But when you have invested years of your life, your money, your time, and your heart into building something, walking away is not an easy decision.
After six years in business, I have learned that success is not measured only by money. Sometimes success is simply getting up the next morning, turning the equipment back on, preparing the food, opening the doors, and trying again.
A struggling business is not necessarily a failed business. It can be a business going through a difficult chapter. The difference between failure and survival can sometimes come down to persistence, community support, good decisions, and the willingness to keep fighting when circumstances become difficult.
I do not know exactly what the future holds for my business. What I do know is that I have worked too hard to give up without a fight. I am proud of what I have built, grateful for every person who has supported me, and thankful for every customer who chooses to support a small business.
Owning a business is not easy. It never has been. But the struggle has taught me the value of hard work, gratitude, perseverance, and believing in something even during its darkest days.
Sometimes being successful does not mean that you never struggle. Sometimes success means that, despite the struggle, you are still standing.
