Today we honor Juneteenth — a day to celebrate Black liberation, recognize the profound resilience of Black Americans, and recommit to the unfinished work of true equity in the United States.

Juneteenth marks a vital milestone. It also reminds us that freedom deferred is not freedom delivered. The legacy of systemic racism, land dispossession, and economic extraction didn’t end in 1865 — it evolved. True liberation requires ongoing economic justice, land sovereignty, and real accountability.

That work doesn’t stop at our borders.

At Altiplano Reserve, we source exclusively from the highlands of Guatemala, where indigenous Mayan farmers carry their own history of violent displacement — exiled from ancestral lands to fuel a global coffee empire that rarely spoke their names. The systems that extracted wealth from Black Americans and the systems that extracted wealth from indigenous producers abroad are not unrelated. They are the same architecture.

Standing for justice at home means being honest about what we consume and who paid the hidden price for it.

Today, we stand in solidarity with the leaders, creators, and advocates pushing for liberation and restoration in the U.S. We also stand with the indigenous producers in Guatemala’s highlands who are reclaiming their sovereignty, one harvest at a time.

Listen. Learn. Buy from people whose freedom cost them everything.

Does your coffee do this? Take me away to Huehue (pronounced WayWay). Get a dose of your daily escape in a cup. Try one of our favorite coffees from the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala like the Bourbon from Axel Palacios or Maragogype (Elephant bean) from Wilmar Castillo. Our coffees are all traced directly back to a single farm or coop in Guatemala and then roasted by us according to Guatemalan traditions with respect for terroir, beam varietal, and culture right here in Jackson, Michigan. From my son’s homeland to my homeland 🇬🇹🇺🇸
