Since it's 🩷 National Pink Day, we wanted to feature one of our favorite pink foods...shrimp! 🦐 Shrimp turn pink when cooked because the heat breaks down a protein in the shell called crustacyanin, which binds to a pigment called astaxanthin. In raw shrimp, this protein hides the pigment and when heated, the protein unravels and releases the pigment, revealing the pink-ish color!

Click to learn more about how TEDs (Turtle Excluder Devices) help to save sea turtles 🐢 while still safely harvesting seafood.

These devices get an A+ for reducing sea turtle bycatch!

Bycatch, where sea turtles can get caught in fishing gear and drown, is one of the major threats they face. That’s why we worked with fishermen to develop turtle excluder devices, which are a grid of metal bars that direct turtles (and other large animals) out an escape opening, while shrimp pass through the bars into the bag of the net. When they’re properly installed and maintained, they're 97 percent successful at saving turtles from trawl nets!

The unofficial New England Summer Diet 🍦🦞☕

If you grew up in New England, there’s a good chance your summer menu looked something like this: iced coffee on the way to the beach, a turkey sandwich and chips packed in the cooler, lobster rolls and clam cakes by the water, soft serve in a Red Sox helmet, Del’s Lemonade on a hot afternoon, and fresh local berries all season long.

No calories. No food groups. Just a collection of the foods that make a New England summer feel like summer.

What would you add to the pyramid?

Today we celebrate World Oceans Day. Why? Oceans produce more than half the planet's oxygen, regulate climate, and sustain the livelihoods of over 3 billion people. Unfortunately, plastic pollution, overfishing, and warming waters are collapsing marine ecosystems. How can we help? Support sustainable fisheries, protect marine habitat, and reduce single-use plastics!
