TJ’s 019G is the second of 5 of our cows to reach Pacer Performance Dam status this year. She’s 6 years, 10 months old and delivered her 6th calf over night (10/30/25), with an average calving interval of 353 days. Last year, she calved on December 20, so she moved up about 50 days! Her heifer calf is a THICK one.

The herd size continues to grow, but the docility remains the same. Bred heifers being brought in by the border collies. Slow and steady wins the race.

I’d like to introduce you to our newest Pacer Performance Dams, one at a time. We had 5 new ones this year, bringing the total to 39 over the past 5 years.

Meet 131J. Not the cow anyone oohs and aahs over in the pasture, and her EPDs aren’t anything to write home about (unless you’re looking for proven low birthweight genetics). Her pedigree isn’t sexy or notable because she’s completely appendix free, like every other cow around here, but get this:
She’s 4 years, 7 months, 8 days old as of today. It takes 3 calves minimum to achieve Pacer Performance Dam status, and a bunch of other tough criteria. She will calve again in about a week, so she will drop her 4th calf at 4 years 7 1/2 months. She calved the first time at 22 months and had a 320 day calving interval across her first 3 calves, and raised them all herself. She’s moved up to the first cycle of our calving window, so she will get to relax a bit now. Perfect udder and great temperament only add to her desirability. Based on registration numbers, I believe she may be the youngest new Pacer Performance Dam in the entire list this year across the USA. Her dam is still in our herd at 9 years old with a calving interval of 357 days over her first 7 calves and will move up a couple weeks this year. Genetics are working in our program and cows like 131J put $$$ in the bank every year.

Three different 1st calf heifers bringing in nice big calves. No creep. We’ll be weaning them in a couple weeks. These are just 3 random of the 30 we calved last fall, with no calving problems.

We couldn’t be happier with how these 3 yearling bulls have come along in the past few months. They’ll get turned out with cows in about 30 days.

They say you can’t manage what you can’t measure. We really like this Arrowquip weigh crate. Using Gallagher weigh bars and a wireless true-test digital scale head. Every calf comes in to get weighed, Visual tag, EID tag, tattoos in both ears, and castrated if bull calves don’t meet all of our first cut criteria. (It makes a pretty good “shark cage” to protect against those overly concerned new moms too!)

Fifty-eight calves born in October this year. Average wt: 80.2 # across 4 different bulls
