Food Pantry LAX

Food Pantry LAX is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing groceries to those in need. Clients may come to the Pantry once per week.

Food Pantry LAX is an emergency food resource for low income clients in Inglewood, Westchester, El Segundo, Hawthorne and portions of Los Angeles. Our policy is to provide food for 2 days or six meals to our clients. Our operating hours are 10am-Noon on Tuesdays and Fridays. Clients are required to have some identification or information showing they are in our serving area, but there are no income qualifications. We are located at:

NETWORKING AT NIGHT -- We are so grateful to the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commercefor making the pantry the beneficiary of its recent networking event in Marina del Rey. Participants in the event donated lots of food to the pantry and its clients. Thank you to the chamber and to everyone who donated!

STAPLE STORY -- Thank you to everyone at Nexon America for your spectacular food drive! That's Nevada Evers, admin coordinator, who organized this drive and several previous ones that helped the pantry. Special thanks also to China Dang, the largest individual contributor of food.
Based in El Segundo, Nexon America is part of a Korean/Japanese company that makes massively multiuser online role-playing games (or MMORPG's, a mouthful of an acronym if there ever was one). MapleStory is one of its more popular titles.

EXTENDING OUR REACH -- The pantry is proud to work with the The Gailen and Cathy Reevers Center for Community Empowerment, which provides services to several apartment buildings housing low-income or recently homeless people. Every week, Dr. Sheila De Gruy, the center's health equity program director (on the left in the bottom right photo), picks up bags of food from the pantry that are distributed to residents of two of those buildings, one in South LA and the other in Baldwin Village. The residents are happy to get the food and it allows us to help people who cannot make it to the pantry themselves.

HIRE THIS INTERN!! -- July 30 is National Intern Day, something I did not know until now. In honor of the day, Daisy Lazcano, an intern in the LA office of Austin Commercial, organized a company food drive to benefit Food Pantry LAX. She collected an incredible amount of food! Thank you to everyone at Austin Commercial, a general contractor whose LA office is near LAX. And thanks especially to Daisy, who is a USC student pursuing degrees in architecture + inventive technologies, finance, and real estate development. Based on the success of this food drive, I'd hire her in an instant, though unfortunately the pantry does not have any paid employees.

SAFE PARKING -- Food Pantry LAX was pleased to partner with Safe Parking LA, a nonprofit that provides safe spaces for people living in their cars to park overnight. We delivered 25 bags of ready-to-eat food (no cooking or refrigeration required) to Safe Parking's Culver City lot, and we hope to help out more in the future.

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY -- Friday marked the final day at the pantry for two of our best volunteers, Mary and John Cantwell, who are moving to San Diego. These are the kind of people, working behind the scenes and without pay, that make it possible for us to fulfill our mission. Mary has volunteered at the pantry since 2011 and has been, in effect, our general manager since 2019. She has planned the weekly menus, ordered and shopped for food, and supervised floor operations on days the pantry is open. John has also been an extrremely valuable volunteer and our best repairman, making numerous improvements to our facility in Inglewood. They leave huge shoes to fill but we wish them well.

HAPPY PETS, HAPPY OWNERS! We are so happy that the Michelson Found Animals Foundation has renewed its grant to Food Pantry LAX for another year. The foundation provides us with dog and cat food every two weeks. In the past, we rarely had pet food to offer our customers. Now we can offer it all the time. Customers (and their pets) have come to depend on it and really appreciate it. Thank you Michelson Found Animals Foundation.

REPEAT DEFENDERS! For her birthday, Erin Leatherman asked her friends for money, which she used to buy supplies for the pantry. What a wonderful gesture and meaningful way to celebrate one's birthday! Mychal's Learning Place, which helps people with development disabilities, took time from its own noble work to donate food. That's Kim and Ari from the center's staff.
What is even more remarkable is that both Erin and Mychal's contributed food to us in December, when most people give. It's rare, but wonderful, for donors to return in the "off-season," when our shelves tend to be barer. Thank you all!
