Meet Bill, a disabled father from Holden, MO, who works hard to provide for his two daughters.

Through HOPE Community Activity Center, a Harvesters agency partner, Bill receives support that helps his family access food when they need it most. Living on Social Security and SNAP, he knows how challenging it can be to stretch a limited income.

“I’ve got to use money that I would be using for gas for my car just to buy food for my girls,” he said. “It makes it really hard.”

Tonight’s menu inspiration from my urban micro-farm gone by, Open Barn Door Farm, after visiting a nearby sunflower patch, meandering home from Sunny’s voice lessons this morning. Sam practiced driving back roads to the field for photos, but the mud kept us out of the picture-patch. Kids purchased boba with a gift from a dear neighbor. Once home, we had an unexpected visitor delivering dozens of farm-fresh eggs. An incredibly happy, easy tempo, summer day, indeed.

Fried Sunflower Buds, Stuffed Okra Leaves filled with Ground Lamb, charred Cubanelles & Black Rice, cooked in Roasted Green Tomato Velouté. Plumogranate Plumcot Granita, er, Plumogranateita, um, Plumogranita? However you say it, it’s refreshing and sweet, and it’s dessert. Only thing missing from the counter is zucchini and lemon cucumbers. There’s always tomorrow … and August.

Pickled my first full batch of beets tonight from thinning our little raised garden rows, and they are just chock-full of sweet rainbow beet goodness! So proud. 🥹 Lost a jar in the canner, but very happy to wake up tomorrow to sealed half-pint jars we can gift to our neighbors Catholic Charities Kansas City! These lids be poppin’!

I’m honored and excited to be hosting the complimentary Catholic Charities Kansas City pre-game pep rally before the big Pitching for Priests game at Legends Field!

Step right up to the “Confession Stand” Friday, July 31, from 3 to 5 p.m., for a little friendly diocesan rivalry. 🙌⛪⚾️

The elevated lineup will include: a slider bar, charcuterie chips, heavenly sweets, blessed brews, games, and of course … plenty of opportunities to show your team spirit!

Bring your friends, your family, your parish crew, too. Schedule of Events:

3:00 – Tailgating in (Legends Field parking lot)
5:00 – Stadium gates open
5:20 – Kids run (on the field)
6:30 – First pitch
