💙 LET’S TALK ABOUT ELOPEMENT💙
In the autism community, elopement doesn’t mean getting married. It refers to an autistic child or adult unexpectedly leaving a safe area or caregiver.
Sometimes they’re trying to escape something overwhelming, noise, crowds, fear, or sensory overload. Other times, they may be drawn toward something that interests them.
⚠️ Elopement can happen in seconds and can quickly become dangerous. An autistic person may not recognize dangers like traffic or water and may have difficulty communicating with someone who finds them.
This is why autism awareness, especially among first responders, is so important. Someone who has eloped may not respond to their name, answer questions, make eye contact, or understand the danger they’re in. They aren’t necessarily ignoring you or being difficult.
If you encounter someone who may have eloped: stay calm, use simple language, limit questions, give them space when safe, and remember they may communicate differently.
🧩💙 Awareness, understanding & acceptance can help bring someone home safely.
