🌺 Transfer Day is celebrated by the U.S. Virgin Islands on March 31st each year, commemorating the day that the Danish West Indies were formally ceded to the United States🇺🇸 by Denmark🇩🇰, consequently becoming the U.S. Virgin Islands.🇻🇮

Denmark decided to sell the islands because the colony had been running at a loss since the mid 1800s. Whilst sugar production had increased steadily on other Caribbean islands, especially on Cuba, it was in decline in the Danish colony.

Transfer Day happened at 4:00pm on March 31, 1917, the United States purchased the Danish West Indies from Denmark for $25,000,000.00.

🇺🇸 The American Flag being displayed at the historic Grand Hotel in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in the above vintage picture was built & owned by my late Great Grandfather Mr. Alfred H. Lockhart (1861-1931).

Today The Grand Hotel exist aka The Grand Galleria and is now home to a variety of shops and restaurants and the Virgin Islands Children’s Museum.🌺
