Being a public figure has perks, I'm not going to lie to you (it also has downsides, but it's not that kind of day). For many years, I dreamed big: to have a sandwich named after me. Some would say "don't dream too big, you'll just end up disappointed," but I kept the vision alive and, one day a few years ago, Stanlieo's made that dream come true with the Izzy.

Somehow, it's both ego-boosting and humbling at the same time. Dreams DO come true and, when it's the beloved local sandwich shop, it makes for a true feel-good moment, not unlike making the local paper or hearing yourself on the radio for the first time. How did we get here? It's hard to say and sometimes it seems like the past two decades have been one big blur, but I'm extremely grateful.

So, next time you find yourself in Huntsville, Alabama, swing by Stanlieo's Sub Villa and order up yourself an Izzy (cold with extra sub sauce is the "Izzy Way") and enjoy. Others have tried to name things after me, from apartment floor plans (seriously...) to their dogs (that ex knows who she is...) but, as far as I'm concerned, Stanlieo's holds exclusive rights to food items with my name on it. Why be greedy and try to push it further? We've already found perfection...

So, I googled history of Stanlieo's and this is what Google said ...Opened in May 1971 by Glenn Watson and Howard Stanley, Stanlieo's Sub Villa is Huntsville's oldest sub shop. Watson brought Boston-style submarine sandwiches to North Alabama, introducing the signature style of cubing vegetables. Famous for the massive "Kitchen Sink" sub, the family-run landmark remains an iconic culinary institution.Founding and Early DaysThe Origin: Founder Glenn Watson noticed a lack of sub shops in Huntsville after stints in the Air Force and at the University of Alabama. The Boston Connection: He apprenticed unpaid at a shop called Santoro's in Boston to learn the craft before opening the first location in May 1971.First Location: The original shop occupied a tiny former ice cream building just south of their current Jordan Lane address.Signatures and EvolutionCubed Veggies: Watson decided to cube the onions, pickles, and tomatoes rather than slice them, creating a distinct signature for every sandwich. The Kitchen Sink: The shop became legendary as the "Home of the Kitchen Sink," a massive sub packed with multiple meats and cheeses. The Jordan Lane Move: In 1985, the restaurant outgrew its original tiny building and moved next door to its current prominent brown building at 605 Jordan Lane NW.Family Operation: The business has stayed in the family, eventually run by Watson's daughter, Connie Ward, who grew up inside the shop.Present StatusLocations: Alongside the flagship Jordan Lane NW spot, a second location operates on Governors Drive SW.Nostalgic Vibe: The interior preserves its classic, old-school charm with vintage decor, old photos, and retro games, remaining a cherished local tradition for over 5 decades.
