To celebrate of Black History Month, we wanted to highlight a foundational piece of history we feel has been overlooked: the significance of Angola in the Black Diaspora.

Approximately 40% — an estimated 6 million — of the Africans forcibly sold during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade were taken from the region that is now Angola.

Of those millions, historians believe the first “20 and odd” Africans who arrived in the English colony of Point Comfort in 1619 likely passed through this very site: the Capela da Casa Grande — The Big House Chapel — where enslaved Africans were baptized before being forced onto ships bound for the Americas.
