For generations, local radio has been part of everyday life in Houlton.

Before WHOU 100.1 FM, listeners tuned their radios to 1340 AM. In 1976, WHOU added 100.1 FM, beginning a new chapter in Houlton broadcasting that continues today.

Through snowstorms, school cancellations, ballgames, local news, music and countless familiar voices, WHOU has been there for generations of listeners.

Today, WHOU 100.1 FM continues that tradition under Northern Maine Media—and even helps preserve our past with SADC Flashback with Leigh Cummings.

A big thank you to the crews from Steelstone and J. McLaughlin who are hard at work installing the new sidewalks in front of Market Pizza. We appreciate all the effort they're putting in to improve our downtown!

While construction is underway, Market Pizza remains OPEN and ready to serve you. Access to the restaurant is still available, and our team is here with all your favorite pizzas, wings, salads, and more.

Please be patient with the workers and any temporary changes to traffic or pedestrian access as this project moves forward.

🍕 A Slice of Houlton History

If you've lived in Houlton for any length of time, you've probably heard it called the "Shire Town."

That nickname has been part of the community's identity for generations and lives on every time the Houlton Shiretowners take the field, court, or ice. The Meduxnekeag River winds through town much as it has for centuries, while just a few miles to the east, the Canadian border reminds us of Houlton's unique place as a crossroads between Maine and New Brunswick.

Houlton has also been home to schools, businesses, and institutions that helped shape northern Maine—including Ricker College, which educated students here for nearly a century before closing in 1978.

Today, it's easy to take these pieces of our town's story for granted. But together, they help tell the story of a community that has proudly called this corner of Maine home for generations.
